Hey Johnny, I'd say you got a very nice circulated set for an excellent price. You would spend much more I think if you went to assemble a similar set one coin at a time. It should be a lot of fun to gradually upgrade the coins as you find nicer examples. Just plan on spending $1000+ to acquire a solid Good to VG 1916-D to complete the set.

There goes my focus again. Seeing your acquisition made me remember how my grandfather loved Mercury dimes. He never had the money to buy coins but was able to fill all but 4 or 5 holes in his book. Obviously he started when mercs were still circulating. He also had a couple of those old Dutch Master cigar tins full of rolled mercs. Sold the rolls and gave me the book. Never to be Sold!

Yeah, isn't it funny how one coin can cost 5 times as much as the entire rest of the set that it goes with in a similar grade? I've looked at these and it seems like they are abundant in AG-3, slightly more scarce in g-4; then they get downright difficult in anything higher. I will probably settle for a g-4...

Yeah they are a good start to your own collection. Do like me, just up grade one at a time. I change up I'll buy a merc one week or 2 or 3 mercs and next time I'll buy a quarter the next time. lol I will always be missing the 1916-D. LOL

Way to go Johnny. Great purchase. I have a completed set, but probably should get my 16 D certified - the mint mark is so worn that it is difficult to see - definitely an AG coin. I inherited most of my dates, but had to buy around 15. Luckily the 21 and 21-D were in the coins that my Uncle and Mother pulled from circulation. They are all circulated, but I like em!

The incurable pack-rat that I am, I still have all of my old Whitman folders packed away in a box!

Me too Jbuck. I keep thinking I could donate them to some beginning collectors, but I am not sure how to do this since I don't know any. Any suggestions?

I thought about giving them to my son, but then decided to get him new ones. My modern folders only date to the 1980's so I will have to buy some anyway to have the later dates.

I think you got a really good deal. I love the Mercs, just wish the prices were a little more attainable but nonetheless they are still fun to collect. I would definitely put them in a Dansco as soon as you can do it as the reverse should be exposed as well for your viewing pleasure.
