I am thinking about roll searching. Is it worth the time? How often do you find something good?

I would suggest that you look at the Half dollar and nickel roll searching threads! There's alot of silver to be found in half dollars if you are persistent (franklins are found pretty regularly, Walkers can still be found and a few people reported Barbers)! Nickel roll searching is good too! Especially if you wish to assemble a set! The majority of dates can still be found in circulation. (Buffalos are found pretty often and some V nickels...I found my first V nickel roll searching about a week ago...1908 also my first Walker 1936D)

Is it worth it depends on what you wish to accomplish. If this is your hobby and you enjoy treasure hunting it is worth it. Financially, a part time job working the same number of hours will give you a much better return on investment. I have been searching penny and nickel rolls for about 1 1/2 years now and if I sold everything"valuable" I have found I could probably buy a couple weeks worth of groceries(I search on average 20 rolls of each a day). Some have found a great deal more than me and some a lot less. In short, if you are doing it as a job, don't waste your time!(except maybe halves). If you want an inexpensive, stay at home adventure, I highly recommend roll searching.

I, too, feel I want to start roll searching. It just seems exciting knowing that you never know what you could find just in circuilation. I think I'll take a wack at the nickels. How many rolls should I start with to get accustomed with the bank?

Just ask for a box of nickels, its $100 worth. Should get you started off pretty well. Keep all pre-60's you find and keep an eye out for War Nickels (1942-1945). That ought to get you started.

Tumbleweed! To give you some perspective on nickels. I find about 1 pre-1960 nickel per 2 rolls on average. Most are not that exciting but they are neat to find. Silver War Nickels I find about one/60 rolls, mostly the common dates. I have had about equal success with customer wrapped rolls and rolls from Brinks or other similar companies. I try to go through about 25 rolls a day so I have 4 banks I have that will "trade" me rolls. It has been more difficult for me to get boxes of coin because most of the banks around me are not ordering coin on a regular basis. So,as I said earlier in this thread, you won't get rich but you will find some great stuff.

It is thrilling to unwrap a customer wrapped paper roll of half dollars and seeing more than half of the coins stand out by not having that red/silver two tone edge. What I'm trying to say is that by roll searching you enjoy the thrill of searching for treasures that in turn could have some $$$$ value plus its the cheapest way to grow your collection.

Depending on the bank or banks you deal with...you might have a problem getting a box. Smaller banks (or branches) don't always have alot of change on hand and what they do have is usually ordered for their business customers! Start out by asking them what they can spare. Be friendly and courteous and most banks try to accomodate their customers (but they have to be able to supply their business accounts with change). If you have a good relationship with your bank there should be no problem. (There is always the exception). I just got another box of halves from a bank I don't have an account with! Another bank a few days ago wouldn't even sell me a few rolls! If the bank sees you getting alot of nickels and has no problem with it, they will probably start ordering more. If you sense no problem, then ask them to order you a box a week.

I don't even get boxes (apparentely my Bank of America doesn't do "that") and I find at least something most times I go out and hit up all banks in my town. When I mean most, sometimes all I get are rolls and sometimes those are previously searched but most times I pick up all loose halves and get AT LEAST a couple 40%'ers.
I think it is definitely worth it because it is the most cost effective hobby I have ever seen. Spend 200 dollars on halves (usual for me) and find maybe 5 pieces of silver and return the rest, you have just come out on top (i.e. 200 + whatever silver you find) And if you didn't find anything guess what, you come out even. Worth it.

Thank you, everyone. I roll searched and found 3 pre-1964 nickels, 1 Wheat penny, and 1 Canadian penny. I only searched through 2 nickel rools and 2 penny rolls!

Be careful ..... it is adicting!
Enjoy yourself and search for whatever 'treasure' makes you happy.
I search mostly nickel rolls ..... and keep all pre-1960, all of the crazy 'damaged' coins that somehow I wonder how they got that way .... all recent BU with step details ..... etc
To each their own ..... for me every roll is a new treasure search.
Enjoy
