Hi, I just received a Buffalo nickel in change from my local supermarket, in quite good condition, the date (1935) very readable, the features of the Indian and the Buffalo mostly intact.

I understand it is fairly rare to find a Buffalo nickel in circulation, especially one in good condition? Should I feel lucky?

Gabe

PS Fun COIN-cidence (Ha!): I live just outside Buffalo, NY.

First post and already with the puns and coin humor. I love it!.

Welcome to the boards. Yes, lucky if you collect coins. Most when found are stags. (aka dateless! Ha!)

Nice find.

Yes, pretty rare to be handed one in change! Although roll searchers here find them pretty regularly searching bank boxes of nickels! Not a valuable coin but worth enough to hang on to it! You would be surprised what you can find still out there if you search through enough coins! Indian Head cents, Buffalo & V nickels, Mercury dimes, Barber, Walkers and Franklin half dollars have also been found roll searching, as well as silver Rosies, Washington quarters and Kennedy halves. Good luck if you decide to join the roll searchers and find your Buffalo a few friends!
Rest in Peace

Yes, that's pretty uncommon. I think the nickel box hunters find one in every 6-7 $100 boxes (12,000-14,000 nickels).

Welcome to the forum and yes, that's a pretty rare find...unless you're the guy who services our Pepsi machine where I work. I drop cull buffaloes in there all the time! (Makes the Pepsi taste better!)
