I would venture to guess it is what is left of a polished out die clash.

Yes it does, I just zoomed in to 400% and was looking at it and noticed a raised area there as well. I am going to do a little experiment here.... stand by
OK ... I went and copied your images and flipped the reverse image 180 degrees to see what areas would have smashed into each other in the die clash. This happens when a blank planchet is absent and the dies strike each other and cause reverse images of themselves on each other. Then when it goes on striking coins the damage is part of the result on coins struck afterwards. It looks like this guy was "scalped" See the straight line across the top of his head. Could this be from the reverse of the line over FIVE CENTS? I could not be sure of what can be seen, but I still think that this is the cause. I'd like to see an error collector hop in here and answer you.

I reckon it's more likely to be part of E Pluribus Unum that's clashed. But Hey....I'm an Aussie, what would I know? I just love die clash coins!
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Wheezydog,
Thanks for doing the experiment. It is quite interesting. Coop thank you for the visual as well. I should take a better picture, because you can actually see the indians neck line right through the the "E" and the "R" in e pluribus unum. I have like 6 1936 coins which I can't tell if they are some form of doubled die or not. Imay have to post them one at a time for opinions. I am just unsure and I even have the CPG. lol thank you to all who responded to me

Definitely a die clash. But I don't think there is much premium because they aren't that uncommon and there isn't a lot of collector interest. Cent die clashes on the other hand often do comman a lot of premium I think
