Most everyone has heard of or soon do learn about the 1965 1966 and 1967 Special Mint Sets that were produced in place of Proof coinage in those years for collectors by the US mint.
I believe these were made in San Francisco yet they lack a mint mark.
These were made with some special care but only struck once, and some have cameo appearance and are proof-like.

I have also heard of 1964 US Special Mint Sets. I intend to look into this every time I see something about them but I seem to always put it off.

My questions are ... Do they exist and how do I find them?
Were they packaged in any special way?

Thank you!

WD, I have been collecting mint/proof sets for many years, I too have heard about this elusive 1964 SMS.

I believe the set was only available at the mints shops, and came in a special greenish-blue envelope. I have every other, mint/proof set from 1953-date except this one set.
I have seen the rare beast on E-Bay auctions, the coins are beautiful, proof-like beauties, the price tag if I remember correctly was about $85-100,that was about a year or so ago, I hope this helps, Mike...ps: Do you also collect mint/proof sets?

Also if you want a suggestion, check E-Bay for old auctions or ended auctions for any, good luck...

Thanks Folks, This answers my question quite well.
No I don't exactly collect many proof or mint sets. I have a small number of them,
mainly because of the quality of the coins. My post was because now I want a 1964 SMS Nickel but I also think there may only be 17 registered of these or so.
I suppose that I won't be getting one but who knows?
Thanks again for your input and time.
