Two times in the last month at two different banks of the same branch I've had their coin counting machines screw up. If I wasn't roll searching and didn't know how much I had I would have lost money. I think about the kids that take their change in. Both times I believe the machine was counting dimes as pennies as there were dimes in the penny bag. At one branch the manager made it good but said the machine was right ... even thought they saw dimes in the penny bag...so why did he pay me what I suggested it was off. Today the same thing happened at a different branch again they very willing paid what I told them I was off. Anyone else experience this problem?

I'm going to dump my dimes tomorrow, I hope it doesn't happen to me. But I have heard of this problem before

I've never noticed a discrepancy....but I rarely know how much change I'm dumping. I counted my change the first time I used the Coinstar at my bank, was right on the money. I guess if the machine CAN miscount dimes as pennies, then the obvious solution is not to dump both at the same time. I rarely search dimes anymore. If I do decide to do so in the future, I guess I'll run my change through in 2 batches and run the dimes on a seperate ticket!

If it counts dimes as pennies it doesn't matter if they are dumped separate or not

Quote: If it counts dimes as pennies it doesn't matter if they are dumped separate or not Rethink your statement. If you first run quarters, nickels and cents (finish and print ticket) Then run your dimes (then print ticket) you will know if it counted the dimes as pennies (at least with Coistar) as it tells you on the receipt how many of each denomination it counted. If your dime only ticket shows any cents, then their is a problem with the machine and you can take it up with the bank.

Sorry but no need to rethink - The bank machine I use gives you a detailed receipt of each coin and the dollar amount. Even with coin star to expalin to the teller I just dumped $30 dollars of dimes but it counted as say $15.31 is a problem ... dont you think?

Yes, there is a problem! That is why you would want to run the dimes by themselves....and not with pennies! Don't you think? Like I said....if you run only dimes, and ticket shows it counted 50 pennies.....then somebody owes you $4.50. (as it obviously counted 50 dimes as pennies!) If you are sure the machine is ripping you off...go as far as to show the teller you have a bag of nothing but dimes before you run them through the machine. or simpler yet, just roll the 6 rolls and turn them in. I'll stick with my original suggestion. If I ever decide to search dimes again, I will run them through the counter by themselves. If anyy cents show up on the ticket...I will inform the bank and let them correct the issue. Since other members have heard of this issue (dimes being counted as cents) then it could happen to anyone, and this is the best possible solution (other than rolling your own)

Looks to me like we are communicating about as good as the coin machine counts. I had only one penny in the mix today, I do that for a reason. The machine doesn't count all dimes as pennies but rather a random hit and miss. I'll go with your suggestion you go show the teller .... you have a bucket of dimes. The machine counts $40.50 worth of dimes but you previously counted or know from the number of rolls you were dumping it was $75.00 of dimes. How does your method resolve the problem of explaining the difference to the teller?

Quote: How does your method resolve the problem of explaining the difference to the teller? Like I stated above, the Coinstar at my bank states how many of each denomination was counted. If it shows any cents then you have been cheated. The bank would owe you 9 cents for every penny counted.

And honestly, if I knew the machine was cheating me, I would quit using it. And if I had to prove a point to the bank, I would buy 3 rolls of dimes from them and have them watch me run them through the machine and see the results.

Instead of waiting for the ticket, if you know you are just doing dimes and you see 1 cent change in the amount it is showing as its counting, stop pouring them in the hopper and get the teller admittedly and tell her.

I'm sorry ratman that we aren't communicating very well. Like I said I have been shorted at two different branches of the same bank so I did "quit using the machine". The banks also give detailed reports of the coins counted. The banks have made right both times.. Does it really matter what the receipt says ... you can't prove it to the teller that you dumped $40.60 or $55.00 you are at their mercery to make it right.

Coin counters counting dimes as pennies is a nature of the beast. TCF's coin counters do it all the time. I have stopped dumping loose dimes in anybody's counters and now roll all of them because of that.
I have dumped only dimes and argued with the bank managers about the pennies coming up in the numbers on the slip on several occasions. Their generic answer is always, "the machine is never wrong, you must have had some pennies in the bag you didn't know about".
When I was losing 1 sometimes 2 dimes at every $1000 dump, I considered it part of the game. Just like getting a short roll every now and then. But the last staw was when I wasn't even at the $100 mark and I already had 9 pennies showing on the digital readout.
I stopped the machine, got the manager and demanded we clean out all of my uncounted coins. He was hesitant at first, but he knew the truth and finally agreed. So he opened the machine and we got all my coins out. I have been rolling dimes ever since.
I can only imagine how much money the banks are stealing from unsuspecting customers who come in with uncounted mixed change...

I think we are communicating fine. And yes, we are at the mercy of the banks. Apparently you only run dimes through the machine. I run mostly nickels and cents and pocket change. I just stated what I'm going to do if I decide to start searching dimes. It appears to me that running cents and dimes together can lead to problems if the machine is not working properly. Running the dimes seperately will let me know if the machine has the same problem that you are describing.

No only nickels and dimes this weekend I picked up $60 nickels and $20 in dimes. Went through them and dumped them. The coin machine only came up with $59.?. It counted pennies of which I only had one, 5.? of quarters of which I had none, about $1.5 of dimes almost $2 bucks of pennies. I don't believe it even counted all the coins from the person before me. After I went to get the manager and the machine had counted "all" the coins the manager ran it again and it counted another .77. I always run it a second time because of that. I believe I'm done with the coin machines and will wrap my own ..interesting thing though is this bank won't accept rolls they make you dump them in the machine.....

Counters are not 100% accurate, this I'm positive about. I've been through 4 $50 bags taken out of my banks counter and found 3-4 dimes in each bag. On the flip side...I was dumping cents in noticed a couple of dimes so I took them out. Near the end of the run I tossed in the dimes and they counted as cents! I didn't bother to complain because I don't want to start trouble. The service is too valuable to me and I like buying bags from them.
