Stopped by a major local bullion dealer today to have a look at a gold maple leaf coin. We got to talking and I expressed an interest in possibly picking up a roll of silver eagles. I was somewhat surprised when the dealer tried to talk me into buying two ten ounce bars of silver instead of the roll of eagles. Anyone here collect bars of either gold/silver as opposed to owning the coin itself? To me there is some beauty in a coin that a bar just can't produce.

I've done both Dog Man. The bars are fun for "special occasions" and maybe just to have a few and for the metal price. Coins are so much more interesting. Depends upon what you want. Value of the silver or value of the silver plus Numismatics.

The silver eagles are $1 coins, the 10oz bars are just bullion. I like the eagles.....

I sell and buy both bars and rounds. The bars out sell the rounds 7 or 8 to one. Don't ask me why cause I don't know but they do. I think the rounds have more eye appeal because they have designs on both side as the bars do not. Maybe the bars just look bigger to people although there both 1oz.

I dont think he's talking about a silver round but a silver eagle coin (BIG difference) versus the silver bar. the silver eagle will always bring more than an ounce silver bar hands down because it has the numismatic value of being legal tender, the bullion bar is just that bullion. The dealer was probably trying to push the bars on you because no one else wanted them (they probably wanted the silver eagles as well)

Think about it. Silver coins usually have some sort of mintage figure and by that, usually means that they are "scarcer" by silver bullions.
Don't forget, it is a lot harder to countfeit silver coins than it is to counterfeit silver bars, as with bars, you can remove the inner silver content inside and replace with other cheap metals.
I personally avoid silver bars because there is no way to verifiy if there is a certain amount of genuine silver inside. Perhaps indeed the silver bullion is indeed true as declared on the bar, but why should you pay that much if you can get a coin with almost near it's melt value and in future, such coins usually gain more prenium over silver bars.

Accumulating gold or silver bars or rounds can hardly be called "collecting" ... it is hoarding or investing. It is not numismatics. Accumulating multiple silver or gold Eagles (or the bullion coins of other nations) of the same year and design isn't collecting either ... it too is simply investing. There is nothing wrong with investing in metals ... and the many of the rounds have nice designs on them but they are not coins!

Sorry,my mistake. I thought he was talking bullion. You can't really compare Silver Eagles to bullion bars as far as I'm concerned. Two completely different animals. Silver bars being a comidity and Eagles being a beautiful, collectable, spendable currency.Silver Eagles will always be worth more in my opinion,in value and collectablity. Remember any company can produce silver bars but Silver Eagles can only come from one place. the U.S.Mint.

I saw a cool bar with "IRAQI Mobile Missile Launcher" on it but I am kind of scared to post it on here because of the targeting certain people rule and its got a picture of a camel with his genetalia on a log with a missile in his mouth with an Iraqi with a big hammer getting ready to hammer the log. I thought it was hilarious but not fit for a family forum to see (I was kind of weary of describing it, but I made sure to use the appropriate words). But if anyone thinks I have said something unfit please feel free to edit my post or delete it entirely and I appologize in advance

Those little bars are what came to my mind in the beginning of this thread also. I've received them as presents that say "Happy Birthday" or some other endearing or comical comment. They are fun to collect but, only as a sidebar (so to speak) with the coins. There's still nothing like an American Eagle, or any other pure Silver (or Gold) coin, to stare at and enjoy! I can't imagine that a dealer would try to sidetrack a buyer from a Gold Maple Leaf or roll of Eagles unless they had an Overstock of the bars and wanted to clear them out of inventory (or something similar).

Some of the bars can be very attractive. This is one of my best sellers. Image: DSCF0591.jpg95.27 KB

I'd prefer the coins, just because they're so much more interesting than bars of bullion.

Some mighty interesting comments in this thread about art bars. Tell me now, is this "numismatical" enough to collect? Ode to the Art Bar. "...well he's a real square cat, he looks 1974..." Rock this Town--Stray Cats
