The economy has been rather poor so many coins have made their way from coin jars back into circulation. This in turn has sent many coins heading in the wrong direction. Thus 2009 coin production was pathetically low for many different coins this year. I have yet to see a 2009 nickel or a 2009 dime in circulation (and I can assure you I have been looking). Additionally the quarters have been hard to come by as well. You can see many of the low production numbers by going here. Sincerely, John Leckrone http://www.coinnews.net/2009/12/07/...vember-2009/

The numbers are crazy low compared to previous mintages. 2009 will certainly be a year to remember for collectors.

At least the p-mint nickels are starting to see circulation here in the east. I wonder if Denver will make any nickels at all next year since the western feds seem to be holding back on releasing what new inventory they've received this year. -XoG

Because of the reletively new special "Satin Finish" production mintages replacing the old Uncirculated Mint Sets (Biz. Strikes) , therefore making these completely different coins....I bet we start seeing ever rising prices of high MS graded ultra modern coinage. These "MS" grades from circulation will be so much harder to get since they no longer come in a "Set" of high quality.....just "rolls" and "pocket change" are the only places we'll be able to get Business Strikes now. And looking through those to find rare high grade MS63 & MS65 quality won't be easy ! ... ...

Quote: XavierOfGreen: "I wonder if Denver will make any nickels at all next year" Considering that (here in Denver) I'm still getting a fair amount of BU 200 8-D Nickels and Dimes in my change, and it's December 2009 already, they probably wouldn't have to press any business strike Nickels and Dimes for at least the first half of 2010... Quote: eaglefoot: "I bet we start seeing ever rising prices for high MS graded ultra-modern coinage." , for the 2009-up business strike coins in particular. A lot of collectors prefer the appearance of high-MS business strikes over the Satin Finish coins. And 2009 marked the end of where (on the general national scale) every John Doe and his brother could just walk in their local bank and walk out with rolls of the current BU business strike coins at face value.

Given the scarcity, would it be worth buying an uncirculated set from the mint?

It's worth buying the 2009 Uncirculated Coin Set simply to get the 95% copper Satin Finish Philadelphia and Denver Mint Cents, which are only available in that Set. Then you can sell the other coins on ebay for Dansco fillers... (if you have any left over, after filling the '2009' holes in your own Danscos, that is!)

Here it is almost the end of the year, and I have yet to see a 2009 P & D Roosevelt dime or D Jefferson nickel so I said the heck with it and bought the three off ebay. While I was at it I bought the S proof nickel and dime also. I thought they were relatively inexpensive for such rare coins so when they arrive I can now cross those off my want list. They were impossible to get this year and I hope the 2010 coins will be easier as the year progresses. However, I'm still amazed at the ease of getting the various 2009 Lincoln cents and Territory quarters. Hopefully this will continue into next year.

Based on the item description on the US mint site, I thought the only coin with a Satin finish in the 2009 set was the Lincoln Penny. Were you commenting on the 2009 set specifically, or other upcoming sets?

Quote:Gawd0wns.... I thought the only coin with a Satin finish in the 2009 set was the Lincoln Penny. No....... ALL U.S. Mint Uncirculated Sets are the Satin Finish since and including 2005. And all coins contained therein are the SF..... including the Sacagawea dollar coin and the Presidents. The "scarcity" discussion wasn't in the Uncirc. Sets...... but rather in the business strike coins released. These are the ones we'll be looking for the high "MS grades". It's the very reason that the "Sets" are SF finish coins that these are a totaly different coin than the ones released for general use in everyday transactions called "biz. strikes". High MS grades of these "biz. strikes" are what we were referring to....not the coins in the Uncirc. Sets. The Lincoln Cent contained in the Uncirculated Set is Satin Finish, but like in the Proof Set, and the Silver Proof Set, they are also 95% Copper (1909 composition). The "Biz. Strikes" are the same composition as recent years (Zincolns). And it is MUCH more difficult to find high quality MS grades in Business strike coins released for general circulation nowadays, since the way they used to do the Sets is now obsolete with the introduction of the Satin Finish Uncirculated Set."Technical" scarcity in mintage numbers (with each coin) would be, of course, with the Satin Finish coins contained in the Uncirc. Sets, however, much more value and much more difficulty would be found in finding each coin in a MS65 with a " Business Strike" (a non-Satin Finish coin).

Thanks for clarifying. It looks like I'll be building a few modern U.S. circulation sets in the next few weeks.

Don't want to rain on parades here........ but.....
There are more than a few Sacs and other coins sitting in storage somewhere. Same goes for the 2009. They'll come out eventually. So will the 2010 coins. Patience my friends!
There's enough to go around for everyone (about 1000 coins/person).
