I did find this in the ground and yes I know it is real. I have had it check out. And yes I know that a lot of these coin need to be put in a plastic case and graded, but I am retired and I just have found to many old coin with good date to have all them put in cases. Oh and no they are not for sale.

I think that is awesome! Can you tell me who did the cleaning?

still doesn't look right to me, but if you trust who ever told you it was real so be it but something is off with it

Congrats on an unbelieveable find!
Keep in mind that Numismedia says this is a $10,000+ coin in AU-58 - that pricing is based on it being in an NGC-certified slab. If you intend to pass it down someday, I'd make sure that its value is well known to that person.

John, obviously it was professionally cleaned! Could you tell me who did the cleaning as I may want him or her to do it to some of mine that I found. I await your reply!

I did the cleaning on it. When I found all these coins they were not in bad condition and I just used soap and water.

that is fantastic John! Would you mind a close-up of the line between the top star and liberties left elbow? That kind of has me puzzled. How many coins did you find in this particular pile? And if you don't mind would you post pictures of those? I think it would be a lot of fun for all the members here to see them all.

I found the cache in 1998 and I was in the Western & eastern treasures annual on page 26. It was 80 half, 18 quarters, 1 dime, 5 reale from 1843 to 1877. I may take a photo of some but not all of them.

Incredibly scarce CC half, according to Rusty Goe of Southgate Coins in Reno, there are estimated to be 300-400 surviving examples in all grades per his book, "The Mint on Carson Street". I bought this one in his store a few years back raw, here it is now. Not as nice as yours! Did you unearth this near CC?

JohnS I will tell you what, I am pretty confident this coin is a fake and as a matter of fact if you will agree to it I will paypal you the submission fee to send it to ANACS and shipping to and from there as well (since you have so many rare coins that you can't do it yourself) just because I think you need to find another "expert" to take your coins to because this is not the first coin that you have posted that has been suspect to me that your expert has said was real. It will be a win win situation for you, you can prove this coin is real to all of us and it will be worth a small fortune when encapsulated in a ANACS slab, let me know what you decide but remember we will want pictures and I will also want email confirmation from ANACS that this coin was graded once they determine it is real and send you the email saying they have received it and when it is on its way back to you

I have to disagree with Bryan. I do believe this coin is authentic. There are no red flags being thrown up on my end. Diagnostically, everything looks good. The washed out "white" look would be consistent with a coin having been cleaned and possibly dipped. I have an 1886-S Liberty Seated dime that was found with a metal detector in a Colorado ghost town that many people thought was fake, same look. It's now ANACS certified. I do hear what you are saying though, lets get it certified then you are either right or, I am wrong. Hopefully John S will see our posts!

I think all this is very un-nessary , I have a friend in Houston Tx that he deals in Seated halves and I'll have him look at it. Because I know that these coins are the real deal . And since people think that the coin I have been posting are suspected to not be real I wont post any more. Thanks John S

Rusty Goe at Southgate Coins in Reno would be the guy to send it to. He served as the Carson City coin expert in grading and attributing all the coins in the Carson City Mint Museum. He is the worlds premier expert in CC coinage. www.southgatecoins.com
