I just got a new scale it measures 26.7 g! My question is what is the acceptable tolerance on these coins? I also weighed many half dollars (Kennedy) and the weights even from the same year were up to three quarters of a gram off. So how much of an indicator is the weight of a coin a reliable method for determining fake coins?

I found one site that states that tolerance has 1.5 grains. There are 15.4 grains and 1 g. Can tolerance really be that high?

I have had some of the same question.

Can I ask what scale you bought and do you like it?

I asked the same question some time ago, I can't find the thread, but I did make a note of the answer, in brackets below

"""I pulled out my old Ohaus beam balance (quite accurate to about 0.05 grams) and checked weights of 33 circulated Morgan dollars. The grades (my opinions) ranged from Good-4 through AU-58. Every coin that I judged to be grade VF-35 and above weighed in the narrow range of 26.50 to 26.75 grams. The lightest weights I found were 25.7 grams for a Good-4 example and 25.75 and 25.85 grams for two Good-6 coins.

The maximum loss from the standard Silver Dollar weight (26.73 grams) was 1.03 grams for the lowest-graded Good-4 coin. This represents a weight loss of (1.03/26.73) X (100) = 3.85%. Compared to, say, Barber quarters and halves (which can easily be 6-7% light at the Good-4 level) the Morgan dollars appear to retain their silver content pretty well as they wear""".

Thanks to the person who supplied the answer above.

here is a photo of the coin that was questioned a month or so ago and a scale that I just bought with a picture of the box. The actual size is the size of a compact disc that holds your music. Although it does not show up when you take the pictures this coin weighs 26.7G.

Official tolerance range for Unc Morgans was 26.73 grams +/- .097 grams. In grains 412.5 grains +/- 1.5 grains.

so answer this question if you please, how out of whack is the way have to be to raise the suspicion the coin being fake? For instance, if I am looking at an 1878 Carson City and it is graded roughly about good or VG then where should the weight fall?

Im not a expert on coin weights but you know when you have a stack of 20 g-vg morgans (or worse) and a stack of 20 ef/au morgans the height differance is quite a lot? There's missing metal on the lower grade coins, making them lighter, so wear may throw the weight of your '78-cc off from the stats.

Hope that helps.
