There have been quite a few threads featuring Classic large cents recently. They just reminded me that this has been a hole in my type set forever. Finally, I took the plunge and bought one! It's the 1814 S-295 variety (with plain 4) and I think it will do. Comments and grade opinions are welcome. Edited by Jaobler 02/08/2010 5:43 pm

Very nice, This was one of the hardest holes to fill in my 7070 because finding a problem free example is very hard to find in any grade and when you are looking for AU or above you have to just wait and do allot of looking. I think this one should atleast be a XF-40 but may even go as high as AU-50

Well, you guys were a bit hard on this coin. ANACS called it a no-problem MS-60 and I presume the relative lack of luster is the reason it didn't grade any higher. I don't see any friction on the high points or color changes from rub in the fields so I agree with a mint state grade. As such, this is the highest-graded example in the ANACS population report. PCGS has graded nicer ones up to MS-66 but I'm content with this one!

By the way, the PCGS price guide shows a whopping $8500 price tag for this coin in MS-60, which is almost four times what I paid. It sure looks like it is worth trying for a crossover. If I do, I would leave it in the ANACS slab and specify a minimum MS-60 crossover grade. I think it would be a bad idea to crack it out since PCGS might then see some imaginary corrosion or altered surface problem and put it in a Genuine holder.
Thoughts?

Please, leave it in the ANACS 60 slab. You'll be glad you did!

Jaobler, if you want to try the crossover then definitely keep it in the holder when you send it in. They'll return it without cracking it out if it won't cross.

Tis a very beautiful coin. I'm still in the market for one of these. I probably would have givent it a 58. There is no visible wear, but I'd like a bit more luster on an MS coin. Either way, that is a dream coin for most of us..CONGRATS!
