So I'm hoping someone could help me out here. I have never collected coins before but just started working at a bank and have come across some interesting coins. I'm not sure what some of them are but... I had a lady drop off $600 worth of dimes last week and as I was sorting through them I noticed that several of them were mercury silver dimes from the 1940's. I went through the entire bag and bought every one that I could find. Now I have $76 worth. Could anyone tell me about how much one of those dimes would be worth today?

Welcome. It will almost certainly depend on the condition of them. Though the the melt value of the silver alone is about a $1.20 for each dime.

Erin, First of all ......  We have lots of experts here who can help with any and all coin questions ...... including what appears to be a great score for you at the bank. Here is what I suggest you do ...... in this order ... 1. Do not clean the dimes or try to 'improve' their appearance in any way. 2. Store them in a way that they are not banging against each other. 3. Make an inventory of the dates & mintmarks of the dimes ..... you will find the date on the front (obverse) of the dimes and the mintmark on the back (reverse) to the lower left of the coin at 7:00. 4. Post your inventory here ....... Some of those dimes may be quite valuable depending on date/mintmark and condition. Start with that ..... keep us posted .... we are here to help. Holy Cow! Erin, that is what coin hunters call a "dream box". Watch for that 1942 where the "2" is punched over the "1". That baby is worth several hundred. Welcome to the forum.

Erin, if you still have any of the others in your drawer check them...you might have silver Roosevelt dimes as well if she had mercuries...they date from 1946-1964. |

Thank you everyone. Deadmunny... if I wasn't too exhausted I'd go through and look tonight! :) I'll keep you posted. Nicklesearcher... thanks for the advice. I'm going to follow your suggestions. I'll try to get all that info posted on here by the weekend.

Btw everyone... I just looked through all 760 of them. I didn't see any that were made after the 40's but I did see about 5 that were from the teens, 10 from the 20's and about 20 from the 30's. mdh157... how do I tell the difference from one to another?

Hello Erin, The key date for the Mercury dime series is the 1916-D (D for the Denver mint). Here are images of an example from the Heritage auction website. Note the D mintmark at the bottom edge of the reverse photo, next to the stem of the olive branch:   The other key dates are the 1921 Plain (no mintmark) and 1921-D, plus overdates of both the 1942 plain and 1942-D. You should screen your dimes for those dates first. Other dates are also potentially valuable if they are in excellent condition. Please let us know what you find! |

Wow, what a great find. Mercury dimes are more coveted for silver bullion than silver Rosies, so I'm sure you can get at least 12x face, maybe a bit more. Look on the reverse on the lower left hand corner, and there will be a mintmark there, either a D or S. Philideplhia minted coins will not have a mintmark. Most should be worth $1.20 each, maybe a bit more. Wow Erin...you hit the jackpot. At the very least, you have about $900 in silver there and as others have said you might have much more if you have key date coins.
