I'd pay $20 just to carry it in my pocket. I used to own the lowest NGC graded 1846-C half eagle. Out of slab and into pocket for about $50 over melt. Someone in Raleigh wanted it worse than me and I sold it. After I spent the money I felt sorry for a while.
I'll bet someone would pay $150 for your 1877 cent.

I voted $60. That is probably a little less that 5% of what it's value would be undamaged(if genuine), which is approx what I think it would go for on ebay. I personally wouldn't pay $20 for it either, but we are talking about market value, so I'm setting my own bias aside.

I voted $60. It is horribly banged up but has a full bold date which imo, is a huge plus. If you were to put this on ebay, my estimate would be close to or a little over $100. Let me know if you want to sell it, I'll take it off your hands

Let me know if you want to sell it, I'll take it off your hands I agree. I'm sure many people would pay $60 for it, possibly higher on ebay. If I was starting a IHC collection, and I needed the 1877, I'd definitely pay at least $50 for it. It's a key date, there will always be someone who wants it, no matter what condition it's in.

I am still of the opinion that there is too much risk of that coin having looked like this prior to being damaged.

I agree with the spirit of your intention, as my own hackles were raised by it's condition but the identifiers ARE present on the coin I posted, the coin you posted has none of the authentic markers associated with a authentic specimen. Completely aside from the counter stamp.

I certainly did not mean to imply bad intent on your part. I am just expressing that I would be very wary of any "key date" coin that exhibited that much damage. And the photo I posted was just one of many fake 1877's currently for sale on ebay, I chose it because of the location of the replica stamp in relation to the extreme damage on your coin. I am no authority on Indian Head cents, I don't even collect them. But I have seen 1793 chain cents and wreath cents exhibiting extreme wear and/or damage that upon very close and diligent examination turn out to be modern "replica" coins doctored to remove enough details to obscure their true identity. My comments were meant "in general" when dealing with heavily damaged coins. Obviously someone like yourself, in possession of the actual coin, can examine the coin very very closely and determine for themselves if the coin is legit or "questionable".

I voted $40.00 - Even though the damage is severe, you can still make out a lot of details.

jfransch, I do agree with your post in spirit. It is the natural first response ANY collector would and SHOULD have when viewing a coin such as this. My intention was not to ask for your opinion only to pick it apart. Sorry if it reads that way. I do appreciate the input.

I too said $20 but of course on ebay? Now on ebay you could post that as a very rare coin with rare markings by real Indians and possibly Buffalo Bill. You could add that it is suspected that this coin was shot at by Buffalo Bill Cody but nicked the edge, it flew onto the back of a donkey that jumped up and it then hit an Indian in the head so he chewed on it for a while then spit it out and it sat there in the street all these years.

I'd say a little over $100 on ebay.

I do see where JFransch is coming from--also without implying any bad intent at all. The way I see it--the whole value of this coin hinges on certainty of authenticity. If a TPG cannot declare this genuine, then it's up to you to provide reasonable authentication to a buyer. Lacking a TPGs cert of "genuine", I would provide as much close detail as possible to identify the die pair- and see where ebay goes with this one. I do wonder if there's enough coin here to verify authenticity...I'm a little concerned all this damage has fortuitously missed the date. Good luck on your sale!

I'd swing $20 for it just to fill the hole in my Intercept Shield album. I also think you would do best on ebay.
