I don't really have any hope, just curious. I have a decent collection of the Ikes and this one spoke to me. I have an entire page of the Bicent. and a few others from some of the other years.

I don't think I would call this a keeper..weak strike,(hair is quite weak, one of the first things I look at) and contact marks keep this one at a low grade..so many better 74's in mint sets...look for perfect Eagle's neck feathers, full, early strikes with clean rims, and no dings on Motto, Date, Mint mark, and you'll have a winner. It takes a lot of sets to find a coin without all the "chatter" on planchet, common on 74's and 76's...nice strikes ARE out there, waiting to be cherried.

I'm just now diving into these larger coins. When my husband's grandmother died in 1986, they found hoards of coins just laying around in piles. They took them all, indexed them and put them in the cardboard protectors. I imagine this is why these look a little beat up. Here is a 1971 that I scanned.

Weezer, Fairly Clean looking for a 1971 P scanners do not bring out the best qualities and eye appeal of a coin like photographs do but they do show nicks and dings quite well. Plus I am still trying to recover from this small explosion that was set off in my brain a few days ago by Charles. Quote: ARED (2nd edition) shouldn't be used as a reference as it has been disowned by Wexler. Any more detailed information on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Terry

I wouldn't feel right reposting our correspondence, but seeing as I opened a can of worms, I will say that he feels ARED and ARED-2 are seriously out of date and do not represent his current files on Ike doubled dies. His only association with ARED-2 is that his name is on the cover, according to his own words. It appears he felt that Kevin Flynn was in a hurry to get it out and that he wasn't ready.

Hi Guys:
I have a deep cameo CP with ~4 shiny spots on Ike's profile. Otherwise it's a very nice proof. I think these come from contact with another coin and can happen even in a 2x2 or other flexible plastic container, Littleton's coin package in this case.
Does this eliminate the possibility of a PF-69 grade? (Sorry I don't have a photo.)

Does Wexler post his Ike information someplace on the net?

Jim, here is a link to Wexler's site. http://www.doubleddie.com/356801.htmlAlso the last two paragraphs of his website look to bear out what Charles stated that set off the small explosion in my head earlier. Quote: ARED (2nd edition) shouldn't be used as a reference as it has been disowned by Wexler. Why I did not see this before, Who Knows. By the time that The Authoritative Reference on Eisenhower dollars -- Second Edition was published, the varieties illustrated in that reference no longer reflected the doubled dies listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files. Rather, they reflect the varieties as listed by Mr. Flynn and he decided to issue the Second Edition based on what he had rather than what was now in my files. This has led to a good bit of confusion about what is, and what is not listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files for the Ike dollars. It is because of this that we have decided to put all of our Eisenhower dollar doubled die listings here on this website. Our work with the doubled dies in this series is clearly a work in progress. Check back often as we hope to be updating the information for this series as often as time permits.Just processing the implications of this have been interesting to say the least.

I remember when Ike's were first made and the excitement it brought me to see a new silver dollar sized coin. Like half dollars, I knew they were too big for people to want to have in their pockets, but admittedly, I do remember spending a few. I used to go to the bank and get them on purpose. I do not remember getting but a few rolls since they were like half dollars in that tellers only had a few of them. Unlike the modern Presidential dollars, people seemed to recognize these pretty well. Maybe it was their size and the intro of the patriotic eagle on the moon design (since the US had just been been there)?
