But look at this thing, if its not a proof coin what is it? Fake? what ever it is it sold on ebay for 361.00 raw so if it is real (and since someone was completely sure it was for that bid price) and since there is no such a thing as a 1878-S this has got to be the prettiest business strike morgan I have ever seen Edited by Bryan1315 06/18/2006 6:09 pm

No doubt, Bryan, that's one gorgeous Morgan! It'd be right up there in the prooflike grades, IMNSHO - MS-66PL at the least. The PCGS popn report (Jul 04) shows about 400 graded MS-66 and MS-66PL and above with 21 at MS-67 and, incredibly MS-68, so the quality of this Morgan isn't unheard of. Price isn't bad either in raw condition presuming it grades out like the image. It has too much of everything to be counterfeit: luster and detail, primarily; seems to me a Morgan counterfeiter would want to keep a coin from being too perfect to avoid people taking too close a look. One other point: Bowers ( Red Book of Morgan dollars) states that millions of these early mintages went right into storage in SF directly from the presses and stayed there until the 1950s when they were released to casinos. Many were held back by the casinos which recognized their appreciation potential, so didn't run them through the machines. Fred

ya know I started to bid 450.00 on this peice because it was such a pretty peice but I have always been disapointed when buying raw coins off ebay so I passed, I really wish I had asked this question while it was still available because I probably would have bid on it anyway, because in the pictures it has got to be one of the nicest morgans I have ever seen. It is actually the coin I used to make the cutouts in my signature

Bryan, I'm pretty sure its not a fake.My book says there were some 78 S's that were struck with prooflike dies. I also have a 1878S thats pretty close to proof like but not as good as that one. Obverse being more proof like the reverse.

Giving the seller the benefit of the doubt and presuming s/he hasn't photoshopped the pics (manipulated images are usually much brighter; these are bright, but not outrageously so as to cover defects), the seller has offered some really, really nice coins. That 80CC sure looks good, but it has some small rim dings at 9:30 and 11:00 on the reverse which might bring it down a little. And that 94 looks a little better than EF, at least in the image. If these are all from the same seller, give us an auction reference to check him/her out; could be we have an honest seller here?

The '78 is to die for. You just can't fake what that coin is showing, unless you're an absolute master. The CC is, if not to die for, at least to get very sick for.
The '94 has had work, either on the photo or the coin. It's way too clean for the wear. I think it would see AU50-53 based on market grading, except it's spent too much time in the EZest.

Oh, it's hsturn. I rescind my previous words - plan on both the coins and photos having been altered. He's apparently got a pretty good Photoshopper working for him, or he is one. You can assume that the coin purchased won't look like the one pictured.

Yep thats who it is, here is his ebay page http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZhsturnQQhtZ-1 sorry it took so long to respond to the question on who it was but I overlooked that part of the reply. He has had quite a few (11) Mutually withdrawn feedbacks and from looking at toolhaus they have all been about them not receiving what he described, that was why I was wondering if he just had a few magnificent coins in the last week or does these things actually look that good. I clicked on some of his links that people left negative feedback on and they may look ok but nothing like the ones I posted these coins were just way to good to be true

Here is a link to the 1878-S that I showed in the first post http://cgi.ebay.com/1878-S-MORGAN-S...cmdZViewItem. So SuperDave, this coin has been photoshoped and if they can make a coin look this good with photoshop how in the world would a normal person be able to tell the difference between one that has been fixed and one that is original?

You can't tell the difference. That's why more experienced collectors are always advising the newer collectors to be so darn careful around Internet auctions. By maximizing the lighting advantage when photographing the coin, you can add an easy two or three grades to any coin. Then a little blurring in Photoshop (nothing major - just reduce the size of the existing marks so you can argue it's the same coin), and you have an instant PL.
