I recently acquired this Liberty Seated dime from good ole ebay for a very good price. Could I have some help with the grading please? It also appears to be the "open 3" variety. Thoughts? Hope to be very active on the forum. It's a hoot! Charlie *** Edited by Staff to clarify topic title. Titles are important! ***

Not an expert but my guess would be VF cleaned. Not sure what is up with the D in United. Pics of the reverse would help for grading.

Would like to see what the reverse looks like. Because of the damage and cleaning I would grade this coin at VF-20.

Good point on the reverse. Here's a shot of the reverse... Too bad it's been vigorously cleaned!

Yes, enough detail for a VF "Details" grade, and horribly cleaned. That's post-mint damage to the D in UNITED.

Thanks a bunch! It's a VF20 by consensus! Anyone have an opinion on the "open 3"? It certainly does match (IMHO)the representation on PCGS.

I'd say VF also, and a shame about the scrubbing with bleach.

I think anybody going by Red Book prices for coin values will be over paying, I believe its meant as an idea of what you can expect to pay from a dealer, however its far from being accurate for the true value of the coin, if your selling..Yes I know its a hobby, but I would like to think some where in the middle I can find a happy medium between what I pay or sell a coin for......

I would say its higher end VF or low XF with a weak reverse strike. Definitely not VF-20 IMHO but harshly cleaned/damaged = (

I paid $18.20 for the coin on ebay. Even given the crappy attempt at "restoring" the critter, I think I got an extremely good deal on it... I suppose that's what counts eh?

I'd say you got the coin for approximately what it's worth.
Numismedia lists a VF-20 for $71, and since they are often overpriced, I'd say a problem free example would got for around $60. With the harsh scrubbing, I'd say it'd probably be worth about $25, possibly $20.
I do not know this series very well so if I am underestimating the value of a Open 3 or the scarcity of his date I apologize.
