No one can advise you on what you buy. You have to figure out for yourself what you personally like. I like Standing Liberty quarters and I collect them, but if I told you to go out and buy 100 of them, you may not like them.

What type of coins you should buy and what is my favorite coin are really two separate questions! But I will say this, the Morgan dollar is my "favorite" coin. Always has been, always will be. There is just something about the coin, the size, the weight, the "heft", and the look. And the history. I've only got a few hundred of them though. I'm also partial to Large Cents. The look of a penny that is somewhere between the size of a quarter and a half dollar "looks" like something! There are a few different designs, all interesting in their own right. When I acquired an 1802 I held it and thought hard about the hands that it must have crossed in 200 years. I'll never forget telling someone about this once and to imagine someone carrying this around in his pocket 200 years ago, and the person asked me "Did they have pockets back then?" I said I'm sure they did, but if they didn't they carried it around in whatever they had! Although I have several from various years my favorite is the 1798 I acquired last year. Only four years into the minting of United States coinage. Wow! I also like the 2 Cent piece. I have a few of those, including an UNC 1864 and 1865. I'm partial to first year issues, and the 1864 was the first year, but also holds the distiction of being the first coin to bear the motto "In God We Trust." Several years ago at the Long Beach Coin Expo I saw a BU Red 1864 in a slab. My tongue almost fell out on the table and got everything all wet! What a beautiful coin. Well, you asked! Steve

Yeap! What ever your heart desires. If it fits your style and you like it why not get it. I prefer Morgans, Peace and Ike's myself. But I'll pick up a nice Walker of Franklin from time to time.

Truthfully I don't like any coins that were minted past 1900 with the exception of the SLQ and Morgan. Anything earlier is what I really collect.

Take into account your budget as well. Some collectors have deeper pockets. As far as Federal issues go, I am fond of Large Cents, Lincoln Cent varieties, and SLQ's. I love Colonials too and some of those, due to their popularity among collectors, can be surprisingly affordable. Have fun!

Anything NOT colorized. I prefer to think of them a rung below tokens, trinkets maybe?

I was going to say Capped Bust half dollars, but then I saw Whytlash's post about the Morgan dollar and I said yes, good point, that's right, the Morgan dollar is my favorite. Then he talked about Large Cents and I changed my mind again! Yes, those are my favorite! And then he mentioned the 2 cents! Yes, those are my favorite too! And the 3 cent nickels! And the Franklin Halfs... anything Seated... or Standing, or Walking...(etc., etc. etc.) So forget it... You'll get no help from me... I'm a mess when it comes to choosing my favorite coin type. I can't choose just one... And you know what? I don't have to!

High grade Lincoln memorial cents. Get 'em while they're cheap....if you can find them.

I'm going to forge a new paradigm within this discussion by declaring my love for Spanish Colonial 8 Reales. They were silver dollars minted in Mexico & South America until the 1820s. Before then the Spanish colonial government shipped tons of them back to Spain (Pirates went after these treasure galleons). Once they got to Spain they were dispersed all over Europe as part of trade. They were a global trade currency and even ended up in North America (In fact the dollar sign ( $ ) is derived from part of the 8's reverse design. Many also ended up in China and other parts of Asia where they got Asian characters stamped into them by merchants. So these coins are just billowing over with global history.

AndrewC- I really must give you kudos. I too love Canadian cents but no one seems to ever admit that around here. That is probably due to so many people in the states being used to getting them in their change on occasion.

I vote for Spanish Colonial 8 reales just like Archraz. They are big beautiful heavy silver coins, very affordable as type coins (rare dates are another matter) and they carry more history than any of the US coins. Join the darkside and collect "8s".

I love Canadian fishcales. These were tiny five cent silver pieces minted up to 1921. I like them because they are small and you can put two equally graded pieces side by side to see the flaws and understand what they must have gone through to strike these little guys in the early years. Most of them can be purchased reasonably up to VF because when they switched to full nickel five cent pieces in 1922 many of them were just quietly put away and missed many of the subsequent meltings.
I have a soft spot large cents of any country though. I just like the idea of someone having to carry around these big CHUNKS of copper and often think over what having a few pennies could mean to the average Joe.

I'll throw Indian Head pennies into the mix.
I love them, I love the way they wear, I love the color, and it's my favorite design.
