Found this 72S Proof JFK this afternoon roll searching boxes of half dollars.

What caused this on a Proof coin?

chuckster, partial out of collar strike. Just an opinion.

Something pushed in on the coin at this part of the edge. You can see some of the original reeding still there on the edge and on the obverse at this area of the rim you can see where the metal is pushed up. It is post mint damage.

I think the engraver guy did not put the coin in the coin press correctly.

. If you found a proof in circulation it's a good bet for post mint damage.

If the flat part was even or higher than the highest point of the reeding and the feature was present on both sides, then it would have been a tilted partial collar strike. You can also have an error where the collar was only engaged on the top or bottom portion of the coin in a straight line, this is also a partial collar strike and is commonly referred to as a "railroad rim" because it extends out from the reeding like a steel train rail.
