I have a 1981 Quarter. It looks like it may be a counterfeit. When you look on the sides there is no copper showing. Also, the coin is considerably lighter than a real quarter. Does anyone know of any counterfeits during this year or if these were minted by the U.S. mint for some reason? Thanks!

Hi, welcome aboard. I am assuming you are talking about a U.S. Washington quarter. Normal weight for these from 1965 up until now (clad quarter) would be 5.67 grams. Give or take a few hundreths. A modern silver proof would weigh about 6.25 grams. Or any 1964 or earlier quarter. (90% silver content) If possible state the exact weight and post a few pics. of the coins obverse and reverse as well as the edge. Any coin could be counterfeited but a quarter would not make it really worthwhile to do.

Quote: but a quarter would not make it really worthwhile to do. Hasn't stopped people from doing it still. Pictures would be helpful. It's more then likely been worn down with some type of acid. But you never know...it could be a quarter minted on a different alloy.

I am still amazed at what that coin turned out to be, as Mike Diamond's article states Solid-Alloy Quarter joins ranks of "orphan off-metal errors" pg 192 CoinWorld, 5-10-2010. I wish you the best of luck with your coin, there are many experts here on this forum, who are more than glad to help, Mike.....

A picture might help to start with and the weight mentioned before. Some are faked though and Mike's coin is a rare chance to find. Some are plated, some are cast. It just depends on what it is. Or could be an off metal example: It just depends on what it looks like.

that sand cast quarter... I remember that... I think I sold that to wheezy!
So would that be a slug? I mean, it does have "1937" on it, when silver coins were still around.
