So, I had the idea to have a listing of KNOWN counterfeits - you know, something for n00bs like myself to have a look at in case we get excited when we see a killer deal on ebay on an 1804 half dollar.

I did a poll and it only got a few votes - I think around 20 - 67% for. Nobody acted on it, so I thought I'd give it a try and see if anybody finds value in this as I do.

The thread with the poll is here (so you can weigh in):
https://goccf.com/t/64446

Mods, please delete if I'm out of line here, I'm honestly trying to add value to the forum. If this sticks here (in one of the most popular categories), it might be worth doing elsewhere. Time will tell, we shall see.

So RULES:
This is supposed to be a thread containing information for "KNOWN" common counterfeits - garbage from China, things to watch out for regarding added mintmarks, funny lettering.

This is NOT a place to call out what you feel may be fake on ebay. This is NOT a thread to make sellers look bad (unless they really are known baddies).

This IS a thread designed to be helpful and educate uneducated buyers on what to watch out for.

Anybody that has ideas for making this thread more effective, helpful, et cetera, please chime in!

I've spent some time re-perusing the threads I found incredibly helpful in terms of real numismatic valuation, experiences of experienced members, and generally what to think about and what to watch out for when you're getting into this hobby. Other members, please share threads that you feel I missed, please tell me if any are out of place and I will add/remove as you all see fit!

However, to be honest the best teacher is experience. Seeing many known counterfeits will most likely not help people in the long run. Good advice is not to buy any expensive or any coins you don't know much about, research and then start buying. Many people lose money because they buy coins and then complain that they got ripped off, even though they didn't put any effort into learning about coins.

This wasn't directed at you of course, I am not against the idea of a counterfeit thread. In my opinion though, a better idea would be for a person to study and read all the threads they can here on CCF, and then ask questions about counterfeits or questionable coins they aren't sure about.

Rest in Peace

ahh, this was the coin that brought me to the forums, almost turned me away from coin collecting, and has gone down as my dumbest purchase ever.... I'm sure as heck glad I didn't give up.

I agree - I just wanted a place to put all of the counterfeit and "experience threads" - all kinda in one starting place. I feel like these threads together embody a lot of experience and give an idea of what to look for when you're getting started.

Johnny - glad you stuck with it, too, you've assembled quite a collection. =)

Johnny, I just read your thread about your problems with the $3 gold coin. You never gave the end of the story (in that thread at least). What happened in the end?
Rest in Peace

In the end, I wasn't able to return it in time, so I took the hit. :-(

This is also a way of learning in our community and sharing each own sad experience in getting counterfeits. I myself has also been a victim of forgers particularly fake 8 reales... I can't re-sell it on ebay because I know if someone buys my fake coin, I will not only pass-on the sad experience through selling but I will be contributing to the proliferation of counterfeits. So I opted to just keep all my fake coins and charge them all to experience...
If and when our moderators will agree with your counterfeit thread idea, then it will be a time for us to share the experience for others to avoid buying fake ones. Discuss thru details of our coin pictures why they are counterfeits...etc...
One thing though that we should avoid is to accuse someone selling fake coin which we are not sure, in that case moderators will act whether the thread will be taken out or not.
I hope the idea of Delaner will be put into consideration by our officers, elders and moderators

Indeed Pandesalapi - please share your 8 Reales experience through pictures!

Of course, it's a great idea to keep or destroy the counterfeits in the market - if I had my way I'd buy them up in bulk and destroy them... but then I'd be a very poor man.

Indeed - which is why the title of this thread is "Known Counterfeits".

I believe your 8 reales is a common counterfeit coin, so I'd love to learn from you what to avoid! Please share! Of course, not here - but in the non-American Classic area... =)

The idea for such a forum is a good one. Sharing experience and gaining knowledge of counterfeits and techniques of counterfeiters would help the community beyond measure. I'm sure most of us have had our run-ins with fakes either through buying or seeing them for sale. The counterfeiters are getting better so we must gain knowledge to defend ourselves against them. A forum like that could be invaluable to all of us. The counterfeiters profit off of a lack of knowledge by the coin community.

I got a 1921 Philly Walking Liberty out of a roll one time, it looked odd, strange color, felt light, just didn't look right, but what gave it away was the mm on the back, it had a small "p" stamped, Well there was Never a mm for anything that came out of philly..lol so someone didn't do enough homework

After hearing from one of our moderators that its not a problem at all, then its great. I'll be preparing the pictures including the edges of my problem 8 reales and will be posting on world coins forum as a start.
Thanks to your idea Delaner and also to one of our moderator GraceOutcast for letting us to start?
Catch you soon on future threads...

This thread from the World Coin section has some relevance as it has a few notes about US coins in it:
