Just purchased: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWNX:ITI'm going to have to make some sacrifices to pay this one off, but I've wanted a nice one for a while. I'm debating whether to sell my partial walking liberty set, or some gold...some of that might show up in the BST. I was considering buying a G-6 at one point, but multiple folks gave me the advice to wait and purchase at least a VG-8 examples since they start getting much more rare in that grade. Anyways, looking back through Heritage auctions I havent seen a problem free VG merc go for under $1,300 and change. I'd been looking a while for this date, and this one is very solid for the grade, and undoubtedly original. My only concern is what appears to be a light scratch on the chin. I can return it if it is too distracting. The sellers pics are a little dark, so I turned the brightness up here.

I say ..... a well executed purchase of a coin your desired. Congratulations to you ...... seems to me you had the foresight and plan to wait for the 'right' coin ... and here she is. I've seen the photos and believe the scratch is on the holder not the coin. ....... BTW .... that would be a legitimate question to ask a seller of a $1200 coin. David

Wow - that is a great price on a VG8 example of this rarity. To me, this is a wise purchase, and selling off Walkers to pull it is an easy choice, as you can replace Walkers 100x faster than finding another VG8 16D that you like at this price. Heck - our favority lot sellers on ebay can help fill the Walker collection.........quickly.

Yeah, I want to upgrade my AG3 some day, for now, I like it! That's a great looking coin and accurately graded. Congratulations! That little scratch is not considered damage and is taken into account for the VG8 grade.

Quote: the MM looks suspect to me.. but its certified.. so who cares! Maybe you were joking? It sure would matter to me if it was a fake MM. Oh, and if it were determined to be non-genuine, while still in the holder...and if the holder is legit...NGC would be on the hook for the coin's value.

Johnny, that is a great purchase...well worth going up the step in grade. I can't say I agree with the decision to get rid of any Walkers. Do you any children you can put to work? And the big question. You gonna crack it out and put in in your Dansco?

That looks like an excellent buy! The reverse is very strong for a VG and almost looks F12. The obverse carried the grade but it could still go VG10 overall.
With Greysheet Bid/Ask at $1225/$1325 in Very Good, this was one piece well worth splurging on!

Wow, great buy! Quote: I'm debating whether to sell my partial walking liberty set, or some gold.. I think I would, especially if you are talking about common stuff. I'd probably spare any key dates and sell the common stuff. Common date gold and Walkers are easy to replace. Again, great buy!

thank you all for your comments! Quote: the MM looks suspect to me.. but its certified.. so who cares! Really? umm, I would care! Please do tell why you think it is suspect? It looks like the correct cresent moon shape in the right place to me. Quote: And the big question. You gonna crack it out and put in in your Dansco? Nope, this is one of the few coins that won't be cracked. It will be velcroed to the inside front cover like my anacs svdb. Quote: Johnny, that is a great purchase...well worth going up the step in grade. I can't say I agree with the decision to get rid of any Walkers. Do you any children you can put to work? haha...nah. The problem is that I like practically all of my collection, and the walkers have probably been getting the least amount of attention. I will probably put them on the BST before ebay to see if anyone is interested. I think I am missing 7 or 8 of the complete set. I have some proof gold that I may part with...I could take advantage of this run up in precious metal... Actually, I think the run up in precious metal is why some of the other numismatic coins are suffering a bit. Quote: The reverse is very strong for a VG and almost looks F12. The obverse carried the grade but it could still go VG10 overall. That is exactly what I was thinking too! This is a coin that I have been studying for a long time in lower grades, and even in the VG range a lot of them seem to have a relatively weak reverse. Many even still have some rim weakness. This one has very strong and full rims, and quite a bit of detail in the fasces for the grade. The obverse looks pretty much like a standard VG-8. Although I am definitely one to buy the "coin" and not the slab, I do think that NGC on average is stricter than PCGS with this particular coin, so I tend to give them more attention here.
