I've finally stopped forcing myself (otherwise)and have come to accept that I do not like the modern coinage...not the 1990s forward Lincoln Cents, not the new nickels, and not the State Quarters. Theyre so cheaply made I feel like any varieties are simply the whole series. It almost pains me to look at them under a microscope. I reckon I'm a snob. Been accused of being a cigar snob, too. Rocky Patel: Edge Padrons: 1964 and Serie 1926 See? snob !! C'est la vie.

And now all you have to do is accept that there are others that really like modern coins.
Then you may find total enlightenment.

No worries mate ..... I'm sure your feelings are shared by many of the family who are growing tired of the modern US Mint attempts at separating us from our hard worked $$$. Now ..... compare the modern stuff to my quest for a complete 50 coin type set of MS classic US silver commemorative ..... that is a series that anyone should enjoy .... great history, the best coin art in US history IMHO and great political stories with almost all of them. No boring coins there I say. David

If your a snob for not liking that trash then we shall smoke our Garcia-Vegas and be snobs together my brother, for I look at them with great disdain myself longing for the days when lady Liberty graced our coinage in eye pleasing poses.

i agree, and the 2010 ATB Quarters feel even cheaper than the 50 states series......sighhhhhhhh maybe we all should start making our own coinage like they did back in 1849 but instead of gold lets use silver, as its much more affordable :)

I guess I can relate. I have come to the realzation that I for the most part hate Nichols. As for the Cigars, there is nothing like a good cigar. While having two cigars international retail stores near me, it is tough to single out one specific cigar. I do like the Ghurkas and the romeo and Julieta (congnac soaked ones)

Quote: ...I do not like the modern coinage... I feel much the same. After copper was removed from LMC in 1982 we weren't left with much until the 1986 American Eagle series! I realize most people consider these NIFC bullion, and they are, but at least there are some U.S. Mint pieces that hold my interest. Other NIFC pieces, including some modern commemoratives, have been okay as well. The release of the 5 ounce silver State Park quarters throws a monkey wrench into it too. I gotta get a couple of those hockey pucks. It will be the largest coin ever struck by the U.S. Mint!

Oh-h-h ... heresy.
Ha, ha. Just kidding. I think I'll come out right here and now and state that I'm tired of seeing dead presidents and other politicos on USA coins. Even the buffalos are better-looking than ... some of them. Except for Lincoln. But even the Great Emancipator doesn't grace a coin like Miss Liberty does. Bring her back, please. Pretty please? And whatever happened to our idea of the locomotive on a commem to represent the railroads, anyway? I thought we had something going with that idea.

j_h_s , I can agree with you, only part way. I don't like the '83's to date. I used to collect by date, and eventually got into varieties in the lincolns. They got so crappy, that I quit, altogether, and went to Canadian coinage. I have gound some nice challenges, (within my budget), and am enjoying the "game". I don't smoke , period, and haven't since '68. Quit drinking in '48. Still like to look at the girls, (especially the ones who still respect themselves, to dress decently)! Back to the silver of the days when it was the coin of the realm, and gold was also coined, and circulated. Those were the "good old days"! Guess I have dated myself, but I am happy. I have a home, and am in good health, in spite of the mileage, and the 'wear, abnd tear! Dick

Those are "Words of Wisdom" Dinosaur I think about how it use to be when 90% was in circulation, seems incredible now, just think, EVERY dime, quarter, half and dollar coin was 90% Ag I've heard stories, back in the '60's and before, out in Vegas, the dollar slots payed off in Morgans , imagine back then winning, and a few handfuls of Morgans hit the tray? And in those coujld've been some CC's ....

Oh, mercy ! I no longer feel so all alone !! :)
Enlightened, too !!
I reckon when Cherrypicker comes out with the 8th edition, it may refer to 2000 - to date coins on one page, one sentence, "Dont bother...theyre are so many errors in coins that a well-struck coin is the variety/error" or it'll be a 1000-page tome.
I remember getting silver dollars in change at gas stations in Reno.

Love this thread.
Scotch snob here, bourbon too. Talisker 10 yr Scotch and Red Breast Whiskey.
Bo City Boys Maduros for cigars - local Tampa roller.
I also agree I'm not much interested in any coins from about 1969 forward. I collect the 68's because it is my birth year. So - pristine examples always catch my eye.
I'm working on a tattoo design that is a play off of the liberty shield on the sitting liberty series......some of the most beautifully designed coins ever IMO.

There's no accounting for taste and nothing wrong with not liking any coin. Many of us should be more careful to leave positive things behind us than negative. But, I suppose, even this is to some degree a matter of taste.
One thing nice about finding what we don't like is that it helps us to focus on what we do like.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I don't blame you at all. I'm not a huge fan of modern coinage either. Since I started metal detecting a few months ago I've come to really dislike zinc Lincolns. When they spend time in the ground, especially at the beach (where they've been exposed to salt water) they start to bubble up and get holes where the copper plating has eroded away. It just makes me realize how cheap and low quality modern cents are. While copper cents can react in the soil too, they hold up MUCH better than the copper plated garbage we have today.

As I've said a number of times. I just feel for the young collectors coming up and having all of these crap coins to search. After just 20 years it's hard to find a penny that isn't trash.Amagine what they will look like in another 20? Amagine the young ones that haven't even started collecting yet.Tisk,tisk.
