WHOA.....talk about a dream Coin;
LOS ANGELES (AP) - What may be America's oldest silver dollar has become the world's most expensive coin, with its owner saying it changed hands in a private transaction between coin collectors for nearly $8 million.
Steven L. Contursi, who has owned the mint-condition 1794 Liberty dollar for the past seven years, confirmed Thursday he has sold it to the Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation of Sunnyvale for $7.85 million.
The previous record price paid for a coin was $7,5 million for a U.S.-minted 1933 $20 gold piece, according to the American Numismatic Association.
Numismatics expert say the 1794 coin, if not the first U.S. silver dollar ever minted, is clearly the first of the approximately 150 still in existence.

I can't imagine the stress involved in owning a coin like this.
talk about a coin that would cause anxiety attacks. Its bad enough when I leave my house for a day and no one is home for several hours.

It's the flowing hair dollar (1794-1795). No doubt - it's the most precious dollar coin.

Aside from security anxiety, I wonder if he kept it in a cardboard 2x2 or an airtight?

I wouldn't of thought it would've beaten out a '33 St. Gaudins, maybe if the St. Gaudins had come up now, it'd would've been more than $7.5m

Yes and no L1011. If that was the only coin available for public sale, like it was last time it sold, then yes it would go for over 8 million. However, they found something like 12 or 13 other St. Gaudins since that one went up for auction. The people in possession of the coin and the US Government are having a big fight over ownership right now. But once they go up for auction I suspect they will be million dollar coins, but I don't think they will break records.

I remember reading about that Saruma, it seems one of the family members that were in possession of the several '33 St. Gaudins, sent them to the Mint, of all places, to see if they were authenic, in which the SS promptly confiscated them, then in went to court, I'm not sure, but I think very recently the family won, but I still don't know the status of the St. Gaudins

I'm sure security is absolutely no problem for the winner of the coin. I'm sure he knows what he's doing and wouldn't just leave the coin in his house without absolute top security around it. It is most likely kept at a place away from his home.

Can you say armored transport! It's sad to hear about these dealers that get robbed after walking into a restaurant for 10 minutes but at the same time, they could have used wiser judgement.

Wow! How cool would it be to have that coin? When the article says mint state, does that mean uncirculated in terms of grading? And do you guys think the coin was graded?
