I'm not sure where to put this topic so I put it in the MCF. i came back from a coin show yesterday with a hoard of stuff. i know, I know, but pics will be later, for now I'm just going to say what I got and for how much. 1. an 1853 3c silver in AG-G for $12 got it in a dealer box 2. 1949-S(better date) Franklin half in XF for $7 3. a 1942 Walking Liberty half in F-VF for $6 4. 1905-S(better date) Barber Half in G-6 for $12 5. 1835(better date) CBHD in AG, verging on poor for $7 got it in a dealer box 6. 1941-S Jefferson nickel in VG-F for free 7. 1911-S(better date) Barber quarter in G-4 for $5 8. 1869 2C piece, the scratched reverse might make it a problem coin, but if they weren't there, it would be in a nice EF and maybe AU. got it for $13 9. 1909 Liberty nickel in VG-10 for free. 10. 1907 IHC in F for $1.50 got it in a dealer box. 11. 1856-O seated half in AG-G for $10. 12. 1930 Buffalo nickel in VG-F for $1 got it in a half off bin 13. 1 oz .999 silver American buffalo for $20. (i REALLY love this coin!) 14. 4 wheat rolls for $9, filled 2 earlier date holes. 15. two(2) coin boxes that hold 100 2x2's for 3.50 16. a coin tube for dimes for my soon to be 50 silver dimes for 35 cents 17. 100 coin flips nickel size for $5 18. my happiness for FREE! so I spent a total of $112.35! Hi Adam,
while I can see that you are very happy with your purchases and that you added a number of coins to your collection, I want to run something by you.
are the coins in the grade that you would like to collect?
I'm asking only because some collectors think it is better to buy one coin in the grade they want to collect in rather than multiple coins in grades below the expectations of their collections.
Im just wondering if you can express where you want your collection to be and what your goals are in building it?

I agree with metalman. When I started off collecting, I would buy every cheap coin in sight (less than $10). Now that I am more aware of grades, I tend to go for F+. It looks better to me personally thjat way.

That's a great point Metalman. I've certainly bought way too many coins in the past that were "below" my collecting expectations even at THAT time, and then years later......well.....I won't say "regret".....but more of a "wincing sore spot" in the album or 2x2. But most of the time, we all "evolve" in our "expectations" too.....we want better quality coins.....and WE SPEND A LOT OF TIME "UPGRADING" ! .... I'm starting a second Lincoln with Proofs album.....and only the best quality I can afford will go into it. Also a second Roosevelt dime album......a second Jefferson nickel album.....a second Washington Qtr. album.......and so on and so forth. I'm also leaving "lower grade circulated" stuff in folders, which I'll still actively pursue.... but just starting over again with Dansco's, to have better appeal and better quality coins. I just wish I'd been more "selective" years ago ! ..... I've got some good deals in the past on some Large Cents, and other types.....but the condition was so bad that I don't "display" them in anything. I know, at the time I just thought "Cool !".....and they are....but......well....one needs to be "frugal". And, generally, I won't label "junk silver" as a bad thing, as far as a "collecting" standpoint, but, sometimes, for just a little more money, you can get some nice quality pieces for an album or collection, if you're just a little more choosey or picky ! ...

First, congrats Adam on your new coins for your collection. Love the free stuff!! Quote: I'm asking only because some collectors think it is better to buy one coin in the grade they want to collect in rather than multiple coins in grades below the expectations of their collections.
I just learned this lesson a few days ago. I bought 3 coins at a coin club meeting. Got them home and while they are not bad, I wish they were a better grade. I have to go to the Doctor in St. Louis today. Those 3 coins are going with me, drop the wife off at the mall and I am off to the coin store, looking to upgrade. I have read it on here alot, "Buy the best you can afford"

Quote: 5. 1835(better date) CBHD in AG, verging on poor for $7 got it in a dealer box In my opinion, a great buy. I have yet to get a bust Half Dime, and would buy them at that price all day.

Hi Adam, Is the 1835 CBHD a Half Dime or half dollar? Either way, I think you got a good deal.

Hi Adam
If you're happy (at no extra cost) with what you bought that's all that counts. I know I've spent as much or more on so few coins and I've been very satisfied.
It depends on the kind of collector you are. Some of those responding seem to place a lot of emphasis on 'buy the best available' and wait for the rest but then not everyone is in the position to pay a lot of money for just one coin. I'd rather have lots of variety in poorer grades than just a few in perfect condition. I'm always on the lookout to upgrade coins I already have but I don't go out of my way to do this.

the CBHD is a Half Dime. and yes, I don't mind the grades because 1. I don't have some of those types. 2. I don't want to spend $50 on 1 coin. so, I'm EXTREMEMLY happy with my coins I bought!

I'm extremely happy that no one managed to rain on your parade, Adam.
You got some deals ... you were happy with your acquisitions ... you didn't spend too much ... you can always trade and upgrade later. What's not to like about that?

How else was I supposed to know if not to ask?
I know collectors who specialize in AG to F coins and are truely happy, of course the coins they collect are true rarities in higher grades, If Adam is happy with his choices then its all good, I was simply asking a question to learn about his collecting style and his collection in general.
it had nothing to do with rain or doom and gloom.

Adam. You've run into what many on coin forums run into. You are happy with what you have and wanted to tell everyone. Naturally many commend you on being happy and knowing this is a hobby and a hobby is for fun. And just when you are happy, someone has to start throwing in you could have done better, you should have gone for higher grades, you should have spent more and bought higher grades of coins, etc. Sort of like when you ask someone what time it is and they start telling you when the first watch was made and how they work. Remember when you were a kid and no matter what you had, someone would say mine is better than yours. One of my favorites is no matter how much you pay for something, someone could have got it for less. You could buy a brand new car for a dollar and there will always be someone that will say they could have go the same one for a dime. I'm not knocking anyone but it is rather human nature I guess. If you are really happy with what you purchased, that is REALLY all that is important. So now you've learned one important thing. If, in the future, you go to more coin shows, buy more coins that make YOU happy, post them, say they make you happy, leave off the grades and prices. AND just how did you get those coins free? I'll wait for someone to say they could have got one for less

Carl,
when I read this thread I see none of what you mentioned, I see a few questions asked a few personal experiances expressed and some personal growth of other collectors used as examples.
This forum has a motto.
Its right under the name.
Education is the key to collector success.
By imparting personal experiance the people who have posted here have done their part to live up to that Motto and goal of the forum.

Maybe overkill or exgerated but just trying to note that Adam is really happy with what he purchased. If he is happy with those, then that is what he may want. Of course suggesting better, higher, nicer anything is good advise but all I was trying to point out is that was not the subject. Adam was just saying here is what I have and I really like them. And Adam, I still want to know how you got the free things. I want to go to the same coin shows. The only things I get free are advertisements of upcoming coin shows or a copy of Numismatic News.
