That is definitely NOT a 1796. I believe that is a 1798 S-167 as evidenced by the die crack on the reverse through the E in UNITED. This one shares the obverse with S-166 but the reverse of the S-166 has a crack through the fraction that is not present on yours. The S-167 normally shows a Cud above the first T on STATES, but it looks to be worn away on yours. Many of the other markers are also worn away, but the die crack on the E is a dead giveaway. Matt |

thanks for the opinions. I just really dont think its a 98, if it is a 96 its worth a lot more.

c22p - I matched up your coin with a number of the Sheldon varieties and it matches none of the 1796s but matches up very well with the 1798 S-167. Like I stated in my first post, the amount of wear on yours erased a number of the die markers, but there's enough detail to tell that it is a 1798.

It's a '98. The tail you see is on the top loop of 8 making it look like a 6. The bottom loop of the 8 is worn away, aqs are the rest of the numbers.
I have a '98 also. Nice to see another one! And yes, that's good deal. Mine is in better condition but I paid a lot more!

Thanks a lot you guys, 1798 it is. Seemed like a great deal, but its worth it to me regardless.

Here's a picture of an S-167. You can see the die crack on the obverse from Y to the eye, and the reverse on the T. Both match yours.  Matt |

No question 1798 S-167. Crack from eye to the rim is clear and as STJoe said the crack through the E in UNITED to the leaf below the D is clearly visible.
