Hello, my stepfather was installing an antennae in an old prison building here in RI. The building was built in 1869 and he found two coins one dime and this 50 cent piece. To me it looks to be in very good condition and I am able to make out all the feature well. I am not a grader of coins but always have collected them. Here is a scanned photo..I do not know how all of you scan so nicely as the coin is bright silver colored in real life and not dark like this scanned pic. What grade would you say this is?

Both coins were found in a little wood box behind the wall.

That is an awesome find and a great story! I can just imagine a prisoner hiding his prized possessions in the wall. I'm sorry I can't really help you with a grade, but I am sure others will be able to.

That is AWESOME! I'm guessing VG-10, but I'm being conservative. It has great eye appeal!

That's an excellent find I bet your step father was surprised to find them hidden away like that. I would grade this coin at VF-25. CBH are noted for many die variation and are assigned Overaton numbers. Your coin looks to be O-106. They also have a rarity rating from R.1 to R.8, yours is R.3 which is scarce. Value of this coin would be around $130.

I also would say this coin would grade VF-25.

What year was the dime that was found with it?

Here is the dime! It also is in pretty good shape and shiny silver colored. I do not think it was a prisoner who stowed it away, this building was for administration. the Box was tiny and has a carved C.S.W. on it? I have no idea who this could be, my guess is it is from 1920's.

Funny but this is not the first time he has found something when doing a job. He was in Newport working on a church and in the basement under the floor he found a metal cash box with 700 dollars in old silver certifcates. He gave them to the Father but I seen them first and they were like new wrapped in a silk bag! My house was built in 1870's and there are things up in attic from ..God knows how long, but I'm afraid to go up there, might fall through.

You can find lots of neat stuff in old houses, though it seems your step father is more lucky than most of us.

Busthalf, Are you agreeing that it's O-106 as I said or do you think it's a different Overaton number?
