What causes this? There seems to be the same effect coming of the left side steps of the memorial. Are these die trails?

Die abraidment. The die was polished to deep and the field and the device is starting to become one. It's not die wear as it only affects one letter. Note the field area above the O and the steps on the base. They also are polished as well so much you see it on the coin in the field.

Upon further review, I can see what you are talking about now, coop.

I was going to argue with you for a minute, but I knew better. Once I got the right angle, I could see just the ever so slightest depression where it was polished. Good call!

Actually, the polishing runs the entire length of the base of the memorial. Seems much deeper on the left side of the memorial base and above and to the right of the area in question, and to a lesser degree on the right side of the memorial base. But, I see it now. Learn something new every day!

Thanks coop!

It is die wear coupled with polishing. Nothing more. I've seen quite a few of them.
