I appreciate all the input on grades. How about this one? What would it grade?

And are those "hairlines" I see on the reverse? Are they a result of cleaning?

Yes, and yes. Obverse, too, especially noticeable lower left, but one can assume in the right light you'll see the same all over the face of the coin.

From a strict technical standpoint, a low EF, because I expect an 1882-S to be well-struck.

SuperDave or anyone else: is this an example of what a TPG would consider a "harshly cleaned" coin?

Thanks Dave. Were all the S Morgans well struck regardless of year?

Yes. Regardless of the level of cleaning any TPG will note "Cleaned" on the slab. I agree with SuperDave's assessment of EF cleaned.

Not necessarily. The S mint Morgans from 1879-1882 are famous for having strong strikes.

interesting to note that the New Orleans mint was just the opposite, known for many weak strikes......Some one here months ago posted a coin from orleans and it was perfect except it was very flat in the middle, I never heard how the grade came back ...

EF-40, harshly cleaned, almost looks like it was cleaned with a wire brush.
