It's officially mid-year and I still know very little about the 5 oz silver parks coins that the mint is to produce. If anyone has some information regarding them then please post it! If not then let's just talk about what we 'think' is going to happen.
What will they cost? How will the average collector acquire them? Who is going to collect them? What are your thoughts regarding the series?

Here's my thoughts on the questions.
Cost: Around $150/ea. but this will be set by the distributors.
Access: Through one of the mint's silver bullion distributors.
Who: Mostly bullion guys.
Thoughts: Good idea but I would have preferred 2 1/2" diameter.
When: Fall 2010 release (just a guess).

National Parks, not Territories. I would expect them to be sold directly by the Mint and if silver stays where it is, price will probably be at least $100. I am not going to collect them, too much money and too much bulk. My thoughts on the series is that it is another poorly hatched plan by Congress. Silver shortages abounded last year for the Silver Eagle program and it even killed the proof and burnished mintages entirely. If they can barely keep pace with ~30 million bullion Eagles a year, how are they supposed to get enough silver for these abominations and also mint proof and burnished Eagles for collectors? I fear this may be the end of the collectible Eagle programs with only bullion being continued. Edit: I do seem to remember some of the initial discussion of this program that would have them distributed through the Authorized Purchaser network. If that is the way these hockey pucks end up being sold, it will be an even bigger failure for the program

If it is.....then I'm glad I got a couple of the last Proofs they made ! .... I don't collect the "Bullion" Eagles.....or anything else "bullion" for that matter.....so for "me"....the series would just E.N.D. ! So....it figures doesn't it ?.....Congress will ruin a VERY popular series like the Eagle Proofs....and not just stop there.....but "create" a new series that will be unaffordable at $100.00 or more....will likely be u npopular too....and likely be unsustainable with Silver amounts lacking...and possibly even only attainable through secondary market dealers...... what a plan......what a plan.......sheeeeesh !Why am I not shocked, amazed, and surprised ? .....

I read the Mint had to buy new presses just for this occasion, so prices will be even higher to compensate it. My guesses are between $150-195 per coin by the time it does come out.

I agree with everything you all are saying. I really don't want to spend that kind of money for a 5 oz quarter. The only but.... I can think of is .. if most everyone feels the same way .... and very few people order them ... just think how rare they will be. I still think I will be one of the ones ...that will not buy any, and wish I did. For me I can't think of a national park that I am that excited about to want to buy one. I most likely will be sticking to the mint and proof sets to get my ATB Quarters. But then if I think to much about it ....I might have to get at least one of the big 5 oz coins ... who knows.

I think they will not be offered by the mint. I guess it's going to come down to price. As a new collector I have missed the Eagle opportunity. I want to 'invest' in silver and I think that to a silver collector the 5 oz size will be appealing. So, if they are close enough to spot I think they could be a sleeper collection.
Given they will be released by a silver bullion distributor, who would you trust to provide a quality coin?

Only a 35% premium? I guess it is better then I expected. I hope to see the Yellowstone one. Not a fan of that hot springs design.

I agree.....not a fan of the Hot Springs design either ! And I do like the Yellowstone design too. "If".....and that's a big "IF" , I did order just one of these monster qtrs., it would be the Yellowstone. I haven't paid much attention to all of the projected designs for the 11 year series.....it's possible that there may be another one or two that might interest me......but I will not be collecting the 5 oz. series at all.....just a small possibility of one or two of them. And I question the longevity of these too now, with the way things are......regardless, I just don't think that they'll be "hot sellers" ......on ebay or anywhere else. If nothing else though, at the very least of things, one would have a giant piece of silver, that's for sure!.....hopefully purchased at a cheap price too !

July 1 is the "official" mid-year so this discussion is pre-mature.
What will they cost?
I'm guessing spot+ $39.95. Obviously there will be no fixed pricing.
How will the average collector acquire them? They will be sold by bullion distributors. This isn't even up for debate.
Who is going to collect them? I am but not many other people. I doubt they even make the entire series.
What are your thoughts regarding the series? Great idea but not realistic in the current economic environment. If this programs lasts, I can see rediculously low mintages and the entire series being worth a sizable down payment on a house.

The US Mint will not be selling these but authorized US Mint bullion dealers will, I called APMEX and they said they will get them and be sold at spot price with there small percentage. BUT they have no idea when they will be available as of yet. I did read about a month ago at least the the US Mint had problems with the coin press they will use to make these and had to get the issue fixed so guess that is the hold up. A few months ago Coin World news had an article about them I read.
