I'm getting ahead of myself here but I've completed my Roosevelt and merc dimes sets, and am nearing completion on my Barber dime set so naturally I'm looking backwards at the Seated dimes. my initial reservations are that 1) it is a very long series in excess of 110 coins, 2) I've heard that the 1874 CC dimes is very difficult to locate, and 3) along with the 1874 CC there are several other dates that are expensive.

My goal would be to complete an album in various grades (no minimum grade required) depending on cost and availability. I have no issues putting an AG coin in the album for a tough date. I would like to avoid problem coins but am willing to accept them for now and upgrade later.

If you are working on or have knowledge of this series please let me know your thoughts on difficulty, costs, grading issues, etc.

Thanks,
rkp

If you do this as a set are you considering major varieties like the CC in the bow and below the bow. Unless you have really deep pockets the 74CC at $10K in G-4 is going to be impossible to get, the 73CC arrows (2k in G) and the 71CC (1K) in G are the only other 2 over a grand in G. But there are several difficult coins and expensive one. While a lot of people focus on the 1844 as a key date, they are all over heritage and ebay, but just try and find a nice 1846, phaw, hard to do. If you do decide to start it up, best of luck, it will be difficult and frustrating as it spans such a long period with so many coins, giving that much room for major keys in the series.

There are a number of tougher dates, spread throughout the series.

[Not just the CC's which are the most expensive].

I've been picking up a piece or two every once in a while for years.

Fun set.

I've always wanted to start collecting Seated dimes + Half Dimes, but I have been focused on my 7070 and 3CS Albums

I had a chance years ago to buy an 1874-CC and I'm kicking myself today.

Go for it, what a wonderful project. My only advice would be go for the rare dates first, you can always fill in the common ones later. In the 80's I was on a "San Francisco" kick and put together a complete collection of the S mint dimes (minus only the 1894s Barber). I have since sold them all but what I remember most about gathering them was having to pay a large premium over the " Red Book" price at the time for 1856s, 1870s and the 1885s. No one that had those dates that were "nice" wanted to part with them for anything less than a premium price.
