I have been thinking about starting a couple of dansco albums including a 7070(I have always used 2x2s before). But.....I am still kinda a beginner at coin collecting (2-3yrs) & since I have somewhat limited means I KNOW I will NOT want to pay the STEEP asking prices required to fill some of those holes, namely the seated lib dollars & halves, never mention the gold page. If I have $300-500 to spend on a coin I will probably get a small old gold $2.5 -$5 or a really nice morgan instead of a G-VG placeholder. Has anyone else ever started a dansco KNOWING you would have several unfilled holes? thanks, Bill

I do expect to finish it, but I don't expect to do it in less then 15-20 years based on my collecting budget, so I will have some holes for quite a long time.

I picked up the 7070, knowing that it was going to be a tough road to travel. I have been collecting (just about anything that I could get my hands on) for over 35 years, and changed my collecting strategy (like so many, you tastes change periodically), from anything and everything to TYPE coins. I used to think that filling up the Liberty Nickle album was a priority when I was younger, but then I figured that I would keep the best example, and sell off the rest to fill a spot (or seven) in my 7070. There are always going to be obstacles with any collection, but the journey never ends. Enjoy the ride, and appreciate the scenery on the way! BTW...my 7070 did not come with the GOLD page, but could always be added (or removed) at a later time.

I have been working on my 7070 for many years (30+). Some years I will add to it, others I won't. I have 6 holes left (no gold page) and 3 of them are the high end dollar coins. There is nothing wrong having an album a work in progress. Like oih82w8 said, enjoy the ride.

Another option is to purchase reproduction coins for the expensive slots if you don't like empty holes. I usually don't like holes and try to complete sets quickly, but the 7070 is different and I don't mind holes as much. I am down to 1 hole in my 7070, and I've been working on it for several years.

It's all the thrill of the hunt. To find the best coins at the best prices. sooner or later, all the holes will have something in them. For Me personally, trying to fill any book, whether it be a type set or a specific set makes it all "goal oriented" This theoretically keeps me focused on a goal as opposed to buying just to buy. Oh...make no mistake about it, that will happen. (I know Me) I guess that's the difference between collecting and hoarding. (I have enough hoards already)

Kind of says it all. If you want to be or are a collector, then it's the fun of collecting. Remember this is supposesd to be a hobby and for fun. If you try making it a thing other than that, it may well be ulcers someday.

I completed my 7070 recently after working on it for around 4 years. I didn't spend more than $300 for any one coin in it and am pretty satisfied with the way the coins look. If you are patient (and want to complete it), it can be done. Overall, I think it is ok to collect with the intention of some holes never being filled. I am working on a Lincoln Cent 7100 album also and am not sure I will ever fill the 1909-S VDB slot. Best regards, Ken

Perfect point by Curio Bill: how many people on this forum have Lincoln wheat albums that they know they will never fill!
I am always tempted by the 7070, but have not taken the plunge yet. I think it will be a great learning experience. I have no legit reason for not starting except for those nagging do-able sets I start and don't complete, plus hoarding to be done, etc & so forth, ad infinitum...

Yeah, it's all holes in the beginning. Haha.
After all this talk, I feel like looking into the 7070 again.

Focus less on plugging holes, and more on finding a good example to represent a type.

Ok I'm new here and this forum has been the most talk I've seen about the slider type album known as a Dansco or Whitman coin album. I had bad experiences with the albums made in 1970s, they trapped gases and toned coins badly. Since then I've never understood why a collector had to fill holes in a pre-printed album if they had advanced from being simply a novice collector. Once you get down the basics, collect what you like, there's no point in filling an album with coins you do not enjoy spending money on or have no intention of filling, which then becomes more of a chore than a hobby. Part of the great thing about coin collecting is the free form aspect of it, as someone said on another posting, it's as specific as a rifle shot, or scattered like a shotgun. But let me NOT belittle those that enjoy the goal oriented albums, more power to you! Happy collecting

Thats what I love the most about coin collecting. you can just do whatever, as long as you enjoy it. You can shift focus and usually, if you were smart about purchases, avoid any kind of net loss.

Hmmm, interesting thoughts. I have a type collection, sort-of - got a bunch of different varieties of many denominations. I didn't realize there was a nice Dansco album to hold them. I may have to look into this. Thanks.
