I recently found these two coins in my family safe and I am curious about the value for these two coins. The 1849 is real, but I do not know if the Mormon 10 dollar piece is. How much would each be worth if they were both real?

I suggest a better description of the coins so we can help you ...... even better would be some clear photos of the obverse and reverse (front and back) of each coin.

I'm sure both coins are 'real' ...... you have them in your hand correct?

Question is whether they are US Mint products ...... I can say for sure that the US mint did not issue Mormon $10 piece.

Show us some photos then the experts can really pitch in with solid advise.

to the Family, hayden_hale!

Hate to be a bubble breaker, but there are probably 10-20 times more counterfeit and copy Private Gold pieces out there than genuine ones. If you could get us photos, there are folks on here that have a level of expertise with these coins, and just from a photo they could probably tell you if the coins are genuine or not. I am currently reading the Kagin book on these coins, and it is a fascinating read.

Those are both very rare Territorial gold issues. My bet would be, as stated, most likely copies. These probably preceeded the hobby protection act so the word "copy" may not be on them. Just to make sure, pics would be great.

Welcome!
Unless someone in your family is/was a SERIOUS collector the chance of either of these coins being genuine is just about zero. Heritage is a major auction house that sells some of the most valuable coins in the world. In 10 years of auction history they have not sold a single $10 Mormon gold piece. The did sell one $5 piece (much more common than the $10) for about $50,000. Another $5 piece is being auctioned right now and the bid is at $35,000. Here's your chance to get a real one!

Heritage has never sold an actual Pacific Co. gold piece in the last 10 years, just a couple die trial pieces and one gilt copper pattern (for $11,500).

Pictures would be nice. Just don't get your hopes up!

Firstly...welcome to the forum

As my cautious cohorts have already started...the chances of rare coins like that surfacing are quite rare. However it is still possible so we love seeing pictures so we can confirm the authenticity.

Mormon gold coin replicas and Hobby Protection Act

I bought this replica/copy of a Mormon $20 gold coin in 2007 on ebay.

Holiness-To-The-Lord-$10-Piece-And-1849-Pacific-CO-$5-Values

It is not marked "COPY" anywhere.

I looked on Google for
"Hobby Protection Act Mormon Coin replica"

And found some online stores selling replicas, including one similar to mine.

One online store appeared to be connected to the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) church.

Are these replicas exempt from the Hobby Protection Act for some reason?
