I have $100 and I would like to start doing something to try to grow my collection (which isn't much to speak of at this point) After reading everything people talk about in this forum I am wondering if roll searching is the way to go or if I should just invest in purchasing a couple of coins here and there.
thank you for helping this budding collector :)

Asking about roll hunting around here is like asking whether or not you should breath today.
I'm sure the consensus of opinion would be to search whatever rolls you can find...you never know what you will find. After you pull out what you like or need, dump it all back into circulation...You haven't lost anything.
I search rolls a bit, but then I also have my type set book I am filling, so I buy single coins here and there.
I search flea Markets more than I search rolls
If you are just starting, you will be surprised how much stuff is out there that you never gave a second glance before.

Just a nice thing to do here, but don't take the coins you just searched back to the same bank. It will probably irritate the tellers, and you will then end up searching the same coins repeatedly if you go back later.

Roll searching is great because the only cost is the coins you keep. Return everything else and you get your money back. I have had a lot of success finding wheat pennies and pre-1964 nickels as well as the occasional silver dime or half. Good luck!

Exactly what the others said. I have been roll searching for just over 30 years and have built a nice collection from that.

I stopped roll searchine a few years ago. I suspect that almost all rolls are from people that have already checked out what is in them. Sort of like the constant UNSEARCHED rolls from ebay. Same with those $50 bags from the banks. I used to go through a lot of those but those too are starting to look like they been gone through excessively.

I would definitely recommend doing at least some roll searching because it also helps you learn what to look for before you go on to more valuable coins. If you get a book like The Cherrypicker's Guide and look for the major (minor too) varieties and errors, not only will you learn a lot, but you can also use your finds (sell or trade) to help you get better coins. You'll be surprised by what you can find in rolls!

Im only collecting for little over a year, and from this forum and the members expressing their knowledge and opinions, I got into roll searching. I have a nice collection going and its like a treasure hunt opening a roll, you'll never know what you can find. Its the cheapest way to fill those blank spots in your album.

Roll searching helps me build my circulated set. I have all the moderns in mint state already but by roll searching I get so much more then a circulated collection. I get experience in variety and errors. I learn how coins wear over time as I upgrade the set with better examples which in turn teaches me how to grade coins. Most of all I can always be active in my hobby with just a few dollars and a trip to the bank. After all, you can't buy new coins every day!

Roll searching is a must IMO. I've gotten quite a few nice finds, and a decent amount of silver. You've got nothing to loose like most have already said, the only expenditure is the coins you keep.

I decided to start relatively small and get $25 in lincolns. I decided to open them all up and start by sorting by decade. I found 14 wheat including two 1955's (regular) and two 44's and even a 27. If that weren't enough to get started with, I found 3 dimes!... dimes? you may say, but yes, dimes. I have only gone through the 60's and found two 1968 s mint marks. I am pretty excited!
I am going to try to find the CherryPickers Guide today!
thank you all :)

Sherry, I suggest searching half dollar rolls. Best bang for the buck. In two years of searching, I have found numerous solid rolls of silver halves, not to mention hundreds of singles.

Nice going on the 1984DD!

Nothing to lose but a little bit of time -- which I wouldn't think most coin collectors would mind doing while listening to some good tunes or such. Seems like a "no brainer."
