Don't know how many out there are even old enough to remember a TV show called Hawaii50 but just saw a rerun on a local TV station of that show. The entire show was based on the theft of a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel from a coin show where it was to be auctioned off. The crook in the story pretended to be interested in that coin from the dealer and asked to see it. It was handed to him but with gloves on both. No plastic case, just the coin. The crook switched it with a fake and started to walk out when an alarm rang so he put it into a vending machine. Later the vending machine coin collector picked up a bag of Nickels from that machine, the crook tried to rob him but the coins all dropped onto the ground. It was found by a kid, spent in a store, put into all kinds of situations and finally recovered and at the end handed to the chief of police with bare hands. Interesting show and fun to watch all the stupid things happening to that coin. Amazing how TV writters really have no idea about coins.

I showed Coinman1014 that episode ("The $100,000 Nickel") right after we saw about the auction of a 1913 V nickel back in the spring. The coin that was auctioned off was actually the one used in that show for the close-ups.

Wow, I can't believe that they actually used one of the real ones for anything in that show. You would think they would just have a copy made.

Well after all that, the $100,000 nickel was probably only a $25,000 nickel.

They had the actors posing with it, holding it by its edge.

I've read that all the "action" shots in the episode were done by a "stunt" nickel.

That is without a doubt. I don't think anyone would allow those idiots to actually do all that to that coin. I really liked it when all those nickels flew all over the concrete alley. Then that one was found by a kid who spent it on candy. It was odd that on that show no one even noticed that that coin was different from other present day Nickels. I have trouble spending a half dollar. An a $2 bill is almost impossible to use.

Quote: "stunt" nickel I remember the show but don't recall that episode. That would be cool to watch. I used to love that show growing up, can't believe I didn't see it.

Quote: Haven't seen it... can anybody find a web link? Many of the original Hawaii Five-O episodes are on Hulu (for what it is worth, they actually link back to CBS.com). Currently only seasons 1 and 2 are posted there, but this episode is from season 6. Moderator Warning: This is a copyrighted show. I always thought they were just a myth. I've heard there are only 5 known coins and each worth $500,000. That wouldn't even pay for half of my 1804 Draped Bust so I'll just stop looking for one.

The coin is slabbed with the shows name on it I think. Didn't it auction for 3.7 million last year?

The cashier was a little hesitant at first, until we told her we were putting it back in circulation on purpose.

Oddly enough that show is being broadcasted constantly on standard TV stations in Illinois. For those without cable or a dish, there is this massive amount of stations in Illinois with oldies all the time. I presently get well over 50 channels with an antenna. One is WCIU with several sub stations called 23-1, 23-2, 26-1 to 26-4. As I noted I just saw this episode a few days ago. It's on almost every day and not on CBS or that Hulu, whatever that is. Almost every old program you can think of is being aired every day. Lots of the old West ones like Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel and many, many more. On 26-4 there is a constant flow of old movies all day and night. And if you like the 3 Stooges, their on for several hours on Saturday right before that horror show thing. Not sure but I think Hawii50 is on almost every day.

Over the air we have a digital sub-channel (7.2) that is part of the Retro Television Network. However, RTV does not list Hawaii Five-O as one of their programmed shows. I suppose one could always purchase the DVD set for season six.

RTV is where I get my fix of Emergency!, Air Wolf, Knight Rider, and The A-Team(my childhood favorites) Hawaii Five-0 was in their rotation a few years ago, that is how I managed to catch the episode in question.
