Thursday the 19th of August I was clicking through the 1878 Morgans offered on ebay and came upon this offering ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWNX:IT. My heart skipped a couple of beats and perspiration was beading . I downloaded and enhanced the photos ... YES! It was "THE ONE"! No bids were placed so I book-marked the auction. I couldn't sleep that night thinking I should have bid and someone will make an offer he can't refuse. When I got off work Friday I checked it and still no bids, so I placed a token bid to keep it from getting "BIN'ed". I must have checked it a couple hundred times before the close on Sunday night (fortunately the auction counter only counts one hit per Userid). As you can see from the bid history only bullion bidders were pecking at my initial bid. Then in the last few seconds there were at least two others who had an idea what this was. But neither of them came close to my final snipe bid. When the smoke cleared and I saw that I got it for just over $100 I danced jigs around the monitor. . This is the key to the 1878 7TF Vams ... a VAM 123. Before my pick, there were 9 accounted for ... mine makes 10 (per the VAMWorld site - I haven't cross checked PCGS, NGC and ANACs population reports). It arrived in today's mail and it is confirmed a VAM 123. The die pair used to produce this coin was short-lived and the majority of examples display proof-like fields. This is why I am a VAM enthusiast!

What a great story Nut. I was getting excited myself as I read it. I am very happy that it turned out the way it did. This is a prime example of that 'knowledge is king' phrase. I hope you don;t mind if I refer to you as King David from now on.

It is testimony to your VAM acumen. You also took the time to look and you were the first to recognize an ultra rarity. Rewards come to those who are not so blind they can't see. Congratulations to you, Sir.

I see that the seller made a big deal out of the rarity factor, Quote:Nice Morgan dollar, not rare or unique, but nice. While this one is not one of the rare ones, the coin is still good but went the wrong way with it.

Thanks Terry and Lou. Four days later and the adrenalin is still purging from the system.

I imagine it will continue to purge for a while after you receive it as well. Dancing fruit is in order:

this is what makes VAM hunting so exciting and popular with the ones who does it. Even though my financial situation has brought my buying to a skreetching halt I still go on ebay to look and see whats on there. I saw your coin but didn't save it because I knew if I did I would have ended up bidding on it and knew I couldn't really sink the money it would take to win it and have it tied up even if it was to resell. I really figured it was going to go a little higher than it actually did though and now that I know you were the winner I am glad I didn't bid because my bid would have been higher than what you actually got it for so at least I know someone on here did end up with it and can be happy for them

Thanks for sharing and once again you have me deep in the books. Unfortunately I have the fortitude and desire, I'm think I'm missing some "ROM" (Randum Olde Memory) space for retention. Jeepers remmey, don't be afraid to tell us how you really feel.

Carmyke, I take no offense to Remmy's comment(s). It's a common "salute" in the VAM community. We all want a "You Suck" ... they are like Christmas presents. And Bryan ... thanks buddy. I guess I owe you one.
