So I feel like I need a side collection to work on when Funds are dry for my US Type set, or I Can't find an example I want.
My wife is collecting a Canadian and a french Type set and I really find myself admiring France's coins. Some a re little boring but for the most part through out their history most of their coins are just beautiful.
So I want to know everyone's opinions. Which Country in the world has the prettiest (In your opinion) coins (not paper) through out the last few hundred years? I've been looking at Mexico and Switzerland as possibilities.
Countries with a Rich history are always a plus. I love reading about what was going on in France during the time a coin was struck that my wife had recently acquired.
Of course, Pics are greatly appreciated!
TLDR: What country has the prettiest Coins consistently over the last few hundred years? Edited by Namachieli 09/03/2010 12:19 pm

Poland always spends a great deal of time on their coin designs.

I really only like U.S. coins but I do sometimes find myself buying coins from France, Switzerland, and Italy. Probably because a lot of the designs from these countries remind me of U.S. coins.

Russia has very nice looking NCLTs, bullion, and some circulation series. And the quality is very good.

There is really nothing more impressive and beautiful than a Roosevelt dime for appearance, design, notariety, thoughtfullness in workmanship for all the details. Of course our Jefferson nickel runs close to that in extreame detailing of each item on those coins. And everyone finds it amazing that our fantastic Half Dollar designs of today aren't hanging in museums everywhere. In reality I'm only a USA coin collector. BUT everytime I go to any place where there are foreign coins, I always wonder why not us? Why can't our coins look like that? Why do we have to have such blahsay, boring, tastless coins? I really don't know who has the best looking ones but ours sure is at the bottom of looks.

I'm not much on kings or queens or dead presidents. I havn't really paid alot of attention to the quality of world coins, but I do like animals on coins and Canada has quite a few, so for now I'll say Canada.

I would consider a number of coins bearing Arabic script as being outstandingly beautiful, especially those from Morocco. The French franc does indeed resemble our walking liberty half-dollar (and silver eagle, of course); both bear beautiful designs, although most of the francs appear weakly struck to me. And laugh at me if you will, but I like the simple yet elegant designs of coins from Ireland.

Greece and Italy both base many of their modern (19th and 20th century) coinage designs on classical artwork and ancient coinage models.
And whatever you might think of the various regimes that have ruled there, the coinage of Southern Rhodesia / Rhodesia / Zimbabwe is quite pleasing overall.

The French, the Swiss, and the US coins are my favorites. Many of the French designs inspired US coin designs: for an example look at an ASE or a Walking Liberty and then look at their predecessor, Oscar Roty's "Sower" from the 1/2 and 1 FF. -SCS

I'd say French Overseas Territories, especially the ones from French West and East Africa during the 1950s Each country had its own reverse. This is a quick pic I found. If you can find UNC ones, they are absolutely stunning. They're not that expensive either, because most of them are Al.

I like a lot the variety of designs of Indian coins. From many Princely States you find crude examples even until 20th century. There are coins with Arabic and Sanskrit script. The colonial coins are often beautiful. And most of them are still really cheap.

when you boil it all down Mexico has probably taken copper coin designs to the pinnacle of beauty. I like this design alot!

Okay, Metalman, you've pictured my favorite coin from Mexico, possibly because I've stood at the top of the Pyramid of the Sun, depicted on the coin, possibly because it is (IMHO) the most beautiful of all Mexican coin designs. The current reform coinage does not approach it in design quality except perhaps for the denominations above one peso.

For me, Sap has said it all!
How the ancient Greeks managed go achieve the artistry they did, with the technology they had, is beyond my comprehension.
