This appears to be a US 1940 S Walking Liberty half dollar from the San Fransisco mint, but the mint mark on the reverse is not easy to see in the image. It is near the rim at the same latitude of the talons of the eagle. If it is a D then it was from Denver. The coin looks to be Fine to Very fine so this is basically a common type coin and not worth much more than bullion at today's bullion values.

FYI: My RedBook doesn't show a 1940D Walking Liberty half being minted that year.

So it's got to be an S!

About 4.5 million minted. I grade it an F-15 (maybe better in hand) and the RedBook shows it to be worth around $7.50.

I have a common date Walker in MS 63 or 64. I just had to but it, I just fell in love with that neo classical design!

I suppose my design preferences are biased, because I also love and have collected ancient Greek silver for about 30 years. I have bought every piece from the most recognised dealers on the Planet, and have kept the invoice for every one.

Hey Moe, I never thought to look in the book, since I kinda knew anything after 1940 in this series in that condition was basically bullion. A 1938 D half would be another story altogether because of the low mintage.
If silver dropped dramatically to like, 5 dollars an ounce, this 1940 S coin would have a premium over circulated 90% silver Franklin and Kennedy halves as a type coin.
In other words, the intrinsic value has exceeded the numismatic value at this time with silver being close to $20.00 an ounce.
