So in the past couple of days I have learned,

What to look for on a 1878 8TF to make it a VAM 14.2

A die crack on a Morgan is caused by just that, a hairline crack in the die.

My next question is, how many of this VAM was made? Did they just keep making them until the die broke? I saw where the rarity scale goes from 1 to 7 and the 14.2 is a four.

I can see how this VAM thing could become addicting, I had fun reading all the opinions and learning about them. To get really good at it would take alot of reading and studying.

I'd better let somebody else answer that.

It is listed I think as an R-5 but I never really look at that as it is a SWAG. What is the grade as that is a bigger point as far as value. If it is a top pop the market gets better.

The guy I work with has a "Dry" sense of humor and when I hit him with SWAG, he just shook his head and walked away. Of course he does that with most things I say that I find amusing.

Actually with each die pair there is a new VAM. The 14.2 you have is the second progression of the same die pair. There was enough differences between VAM-14 and VAM-14.2 to require a number added to the progression. The dies were used until they pretty much shattered in some instances so in some cases there are 20 different variations of one particular die marriage because the dies were so worn and cracked or shattered it required another number to be added to the main die pair, in your case 14.2. I actually think there is 20 in the VAM-14 die marriage so it should go from VAM-14 (which is a fresh set of dies with certain characteristics) all the way to VAM-14.20 with the same characteristics VAM-14 has with added markers from one thing or another happening to the dies through out its life span which would warrant a number to be added to the original

Edit: I was mistaken in this post and was actually talking about a Letter (example VAM-1,VAM1A,VAM-1B...) instead of numbers. I am sorry for the wrong information I posted

Is October 4th something like April Fools day Bryan? I KNOW you don't really mean any of that stuff.

Okay, I really think that this is some sort of trap, but I'll bite anyway......

Why this particular numbering system is used for this particular group of die pairings makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me, but I assure you that neither die used for VAM 14 was used for VAM 14.2.

That is not what the period behind the 14 means. There are no stage designations in the 8TF series for die pairs (except for the clashing revisions of vams 2A, 9A, 14.1A, 14.4A, 18A, and 22A).

The VAM 14.2 obverse is unique. No other VAM shares this particular obverse.

The VAM 14.2 reverse is the second stage of a reverse shared with first stage VAM 14.20 and third stage VAM 14.15.

No other vams share this reverse with VAM 14.2 other than vams 14.20 and 14.15.
