Notice the lettering is on the rim/edge. What causes this?

It's a Nikon Coolpix, but I took the picture thru a 8x magnifyer loop. Just basically press the camera lens against the magnifyer.

Probably used in a casino for a time and the mechanical machines damaged this area for continued use.

I don't think it came from PMD. The letters were stamped on the rim. Look at the "L" which is stamped directly onto the rim.
My question was more on how does the rim or edge get stamped letters on it. There should be a gap between the rim and the letters.

It get "rolled" over as the metal deforms around it. I agree with coop, looks like a slot machine coin.

If this is a 1982 quarter, then it's normal.
