Sorry to bombard you all with this (my next posts will be bust half dollars (thanks Moe!) and other fun stuff--but I want your opinions on this quarter. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...K:MEBOFFX:ITThe dealer acknowledged that it has in fact been cleaned. I asked him for specification, which I am still awaiting. I appreciate his honesty--but would like to know if 300 for an 1853 Quarter with choice AU details and some decent color is worth it. This isn't some glam artificial toner--and I am not looking to spend lots of money, but I would like a nice, colored, and detailed Seated quarter for a type collection. What do you think? Is 300 decent for a coin like this? |

I think the price is too high. Detail is very strong but the color and overall look do not appear original. Recent Heritage sales of this date in certified, no-problem AU are mostly in the $200 range.

I agree. I don't care for the eye appeal of this coin. $395 is too much for this coin. Looks cleaned as well as corroded.

Just as a point of reference, I bought this coin as a Buy-It-Now on ebay in March, 2007. It's graded XF45 in a no-problem NGC slab. I consider it below average for the grade since the surfaces are a bit rough and the coin had probably been dipped at some point. Nevertheless, I think it is a better coin than the $395 example linked in this thread. My total cost was $107. Prices have gone up since 2007 but not THAT much. My point remains: shop around; you can do better.   Edited by Jaobler

I agree with Jaobler. I bought mine for raw $75 about a year ago,   and though it's obviously been dipped, it still retains a lot of luster which is why I like it. |

Thanks for your suggestions--I will keep my eyes peeled for a nice (and well priced) specimen. would prefer to stay in the high XF or AU range--as it is cheaper and can still come with much luster. Thanks again!

coin in the original link looks harshly cleaned. You'd have a heck of a hard time selling it if you ever had to - not that you may ever think you would, I'm just saying it's something to consider. Why get a cleaned example when you can get a problem free one with a little searching.

Most of the coins from that ebay seller are harshly cleaned and overpriced |
