I am waiting on the final Franklin half dollar to complete my Franklin Dansco book. I noticed that I have 5 empty holes in it. I was thinking of filling those with Franklin Commemoratives. I found some on E-Bay but was wondering if they be the correct size to fit in the holes? Thanks,

Are you talking about the Franklin commemorative dollars, young scientist and founding father?
If so .. no they will not fit.

Yes GoldRush58, those are the one's that I saw on E-Bay. I didn't want to buy them only to find they would not fit. Thanks for the info!

The 2006 Franklin commems are silver dollar size. Some people will fill the extra holes with Type 2 or proof Franklins.

Thanks bio, where can I learn more about type 2 Franklins? I have checked my RedBook and also US Coin Facts and History and I do not see anything about them.

I filled my five extra holes with the best of the extras that I had, nothing special. I did not want to use proofs because then I would want all of the proofs. Which would mean third page and then more empty holes!

The Type 2 Franklins are a bit of an under appreciated variety but are getting a bit more attention now that they are listed in the Numismatic News monthly Coin Market price guide. They would be analogous to the Washington quarter Type A and B reverses in that proof reverse dies were recycled for use on business strikes. However, the proof Franklins had a few minor differences from the business strikes just like Washingtons. The primary PUP for the Type 2 reverse is the eaglet. Type 1 eaglets have four indistinct wing feathers on each side while Type 2 eaglets have three bold feathers.

Is there a type 1 & 2 for each year the Franklins were minted? Also I am looking at my Franklins now and I count alot more wing feathers than 3-4, more like 6. I am sure I must be looking at the wrong area of the wing?

I got on the computer this morning and looked up Franklins Type 1 & 2. It seems that there was 3 years of types 1 & 2. 1956, 1958 and 1959. My 56 is type 1, with my 58 and 59 type 2. Isn't the internet great!

I filled mine with two Franklin museum tokens (they are smaller but I used black foam 28mm from airtights to snug them up. One other hole has a 10mm sterling silver Franklin from the Franklin mint no less.. and the final hole has a cutout Franklin with Liberty Bell. You could always put a Bugs Bunny Franklin in one too.... Paleoguy

To finish my set I put the following

1892 Columbian Expo , Booker T. Washington, barber, walking liberty and a 1964 kennedy

As a reminder to what sets I hope to complete one day

I have an idea about 4 of the 5 holes, fill them with the previous year series 1947, 1947-D Walking liberty's and 1964, 1964-D Kennedy's

That is not a bad idea!

I second that!

For hole #5, you could consider a silver Bicentennial Half Dollar - Franklin spent a fair amount of time in Independence Hall, the building featured on the reverse of 1776-1976 half dollar.

Great ideas!

Pssst... this thread is almost 11 years old. I'm guessing Wornslick has probably figured out something by now. But maybe not.
