Can't tell if there are any letters of Liberty visible. So G4-6 details, unless some letters visibile, then VG details. Tough coin in any grade though and plugs the hole until better one comes along!

Looks like a mixture of corrosion and damage. I put it at G6/corroded-damaged.

I have to go with AG-3 with a fair degree of corrosion.

But I still like it! Anything old is cool!

This is a question that begs forgiveness of my ignorance: how can you tell it's not an altered 1896?

The diagnostics of the top loop of each 8 is on par with a genuine coin.

The portrait seems to be sharp and have more depth than a G coin to me, its just hard to tell 'LIBERTY' and such because its basically obliterated by the corrosion.

You're talking about a $30 coin maybe, I think.

I think that coin spent some time in the ground.

This is one of the coins I do collect, and I'd give it an AG3. Too bad you didn't get a better specimen.
