For some reason I have never figured out, Machine Doubling is very common on 1968S, 1969S, and 1970S Lincoln cents. I have a bunch of them saved off in tubes to use as educational tools.

I guess I'm still having trouble determining the difference between Machine Doubling and true double die. From what I've read Machine Doubling leaves a flat area like a shelf? I guess it's one of those things you would have to actually have one in hand to see the difference.

mrh70, the other thing to notice is how the letters and numbers are skinnier...my pics suck, but you can really see it on LIBERTY

Here's a comparison pic I made a while back between a 69-S with MD and the well-known 69-S DDO.
I once found a 69-S with severe MD, and my heart skipped a beat. On MD coins, the damage will show up on the mintmark too. Since the mintmark was punched after a die was hubbed, a real DDO won't show doubling there.

Machine Doubling also happens on doubled dies.

Coop--great point! Would that be a pic of that recent 69-S DDO found?
I recall the coin was initially dismissed because somebody saw the MD...

Nice pic coop!

I've been wanting to see a doubled die with MD. That is awesome!

Of course, I would prefer that particular coin not have it. But, I certainly wouldn't complain to be the owner of it!

The point for posting it is that no one really wants a variety with Machine Doubling. They happen and if you had a choice to buy one, it would be less desirable as it is Machine Doubling damaged.

The image is from Ken Potter's site. I embellished it a bit.

Coach: There are a lot of them out there. the 1968-1971 coins are full of them. Worth what it says on the back.

Even the 69-S DDO? A recent example found in Michigan with MD sold for $126k on Heritage.

I like the machine doubled 69-S. It is as close as I'll ever get to the real DDO.

I like the real images, too.

There are a lot of other things that appeal to others that I wouldn't touch. Even if it brought big money. I will keep looking for them to sell to others who are not as much of a coin connoisseur like me that have more money than mental capacity.

I would take a machine damaged 1969S doubled die, but I wouldn't be willing to pay anywhere full money for it even if I had that much. I would always consider it a coin to eventually replace if I could, because it's damaged.

Part of the appeal of doubled dies is being able to see the doubling without being hindered by something as pesky as Machine Doubling confusing the issue of the beautiful doubled die. It makes my heart sink to find nice die varieties that have Machine Doubling - they are damaged goods.
