So I decided to buy my first Kennedy half dollar rolls from the bank today. I had to call about 15 banks in Nashville, TN to find one that had them. When I arrived she told me that she hardly ever sees a silver coin anymore so that kinda bummed me. Heres what I got: 1776-1976: 32 1971: 6 1972: 6 1973: 4 1974: 3 1977: 2 1979: 6 1982: 1 Thats all I got. For some reason I got a ton of those 1776-1976 ones. Guess it wasnt that great of a first pull.

hang in thre and keep searching. Very high mintages from 71 to 79 so you will see them in large numbers even in well mixed rolls. That's not a very good mix. Hope you had some nicer AU-BU keepers and the 82 should be kept if in decent shape since there was no mint set that year.

You have to start somewhere though. Quote: For some reason I got a ton of those 1776-1976 ones. Just look at the mintage numbers and you will understand why.

Just keep trying. Also get all the loose ones they may have. The 40% halves get overlooked a lot by the younger tellers. patience and persistence pays off when hunting rolls of any kind.

Honestly, there were some nice ones in the mix an the 1982 one is probably one of the nicer looking ones.

Sometimes it takes 1000s of coins to find a keeper, and other times you could score a whole roll. Generally you are not finding keepers that have been in circulation for 50 years, but rather finding part of a collection that someone took to the bank for face value. A kid or spouse of the original collector may not understand the coins' worth and turn them in for face putting them out there for us to find.

Also keep an eye out for proof coins. A lot of non silver (and occasionally silver) proof coins end up out there to find. They may not be worth much more than face, but can be enjoyable to rescue from rolls. Can be fun to try to put together a collection of the proofs from roll hunting. To spot them, a lot of times the edges appear thicker than the other coins -- also if you are checking the dates they have the S mintmark.

Hang in there Casutherland. Like a couple of the others have said, it sometimes will take a couple thousand before finding silver. Been through that stretch before and its tempting to hang it up. Then, you hit one bank that has $100 worth and you open it them up to see 3 full rolls of silver. That makes it worth hunting!

I'd have to go back a couple years to post my firsts. Keep it up and you will hit the solid silver roll. Right place at the right time!
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

They are joking either. Check out this bank score I made in April of 09. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...silver,hoard

Yup I believe it, what if I wanted to go to the bank and turn back in some of the duplicates I received today but dont have the paper for the rolls still. Do you think they will take them?

I have gotten them in home made rolls where someone just rolled them in a piece of paper and taped it shut. Just don't take them back where you got them. Find one bank where you are going to dump your rejects and stick with it. I take mine to the next town down the road and still manage to get some of the rolls back here where I live. I mark my old rolls with a special symbol.

Find at least one "dump bank" and take your rejects there. And stick with it. Here's what happened to me just before Christmas: https://goccf.com/t/76902Perseverance is the key.

Can you take them to any bank at all, even if you do not have an account with the bank? Will they still cash them?

Take them to any bank but make sure they are rolled. They may count every single one or they may count one and do a height comparison with all the others. It is US currency so you can just spend them if you want. oh and okiepb that is amazing. All I found is proof silver half dollars. Thats about it. I have found close to 80 40% silver halves and 2 90% halves. I have searched every bank in the Northeast Cincinnati area and I have not found silver in awhile. Got one today though.
