I am assuming you mean AT or NT on the PF coin or is it the Morgan? I think the blue toning(Russ's coin) takes a very lone time to develope such toning, I don't think its been dipped or cleaned....

Alignment IV....eagle flying level....Liberty's head opposite F in of. All of these coins are circulation strikes... (there were no proofs). Anyway, here is what I thought you would all find interesting.... the coin already shown is the same coin in the following comparison.... (they are all the same coin).... You cannot see it in the photos here, but there is a cheek blemish scratch that confirms that it is all one and the same coin..... here are the before and after shots.... problem coin transformed into an MS-63 (with NT ?). edited to strike through the proof or circulation strike statement, as I really do not know for sure what they were.... PCGS called this one a proof, so there is a pretty good possibility that they know better than I do.... but then, they graded a doctored coin, so...

Fascinating. That's a great AT, faithful to the original toning pattern except for next to the arm and under RICA.

IIRC there were about 300 originals, struck as proofs but some allowed into circulation.

Doctored and still worth $20 grand more? Who has the strings to pull that one off? cleaned would have been half of the $19,000

I really don't know who the cosmetic surgeon was, but the point is that AT/NT is not such a cinch to spot.... I assume that the toning help to mask the earlier cleaning...... There are some very skillful folks running around.

What is the difference between "cleaned" as on ANACS labels, and "improperly cleaned" as on NCS labels?

Wow I'm glad I said PF62 and referenced problems in upper left obverse. I didn't pick up on it as a retoned cleaned coin but I think knocking down the grade a few notches is a safe approach if the origin of a problem is indeterminate.

NCS considers good cleaning to be conservation so if they get a coin that was previously cleaned by methods not up to their standards it gets bagged with the improper label. I like the ANACS approach in theory, if a coin has any prior cleaning good or bad note it, assign the details grade, and let the buyer decide. For rare coins well conserved, a cleaned label on a TPG slab is irrelevant buyers will bid based on eye appeal and details.

Thanks, that is kinda what I thought... okay, I am not much into grading, and I don't have any pictures of any more interesting coins, so it is up to you guys to come up with something to keep the thread going.... Russ always has interesting coins (often in grades above VG-10 as well)... I realize that they probably shouldn't, but do certain inherent features on a coin detract from the grade that you might assign? Stuff like doubling, weak strike, strike through, toning, clashes, rim Cuds, etc? Are you really totally objective, or just a little biased sometimes? edited to add: I have heard that the rarity (or value) of a specific variety may be a large factor in the grade that a coin receives from a TPG.... doesn't this say something to you about the biases that a TPG carries, or is this all a measure of market manipulation? Either way, to me, it lays a foundation in my mind as to their credibility in consistent grading standards.
