If you are selling a coin on ebay, is it unethical(or at least in poor taste) to reference links to the most recent ended auctions in the listing to give the buyer an idea of what the last similar coin sold for?

I don't think so at all...and I think using the most successful ones as a template is smart business as long as it was not dishonest. Not sure you would need a link though, just mention it as a recently ended auction that went for xxx dollars and how your coin is different or the same, etc. I'm not sure mentioning a price helps but that's up to you...it could backfire if it started going higher than your example.

I don't consider this any sort of a problem, moral or otherwise. It's nothing I've ever done - do you know if precise linking is permissible?
I will say, if you link, link to realistic prices rather than inflated ones. That would be stepping over the line to me, y'know?

I've done it for non coin related items before with no problems from sellers and it always worked in my favor.

I would think it to be OK as long as you get permission from the seller to link to his/her ended auction.

It seems like good marketing strategy to me.

I think it sounds good too...but I sold an antique Harley carb last year...watched auctions for a month, they averaged $170-$190...so I put it on...was even offered $150 BIN...declined...it went all the way to $327...I still have no idea why. But anyway, that's why I mentioned it could backfire.

Thanks all for your comments. I wanted to ask unbiased, because I had recently put a coin for sale on ebay. In my listing, I put a link to the ONLY recent ended auction of a similar coin in a similar grade, clearly spelling out that this was only a record of the latest one that sold. The evening, I received an email from the seller of the link I had posted, and he basically told me not to use his listing as a means to sell my coin and told me to remove the link. Since I had my own pictures and only referenced his listing as a recent sale, I thought this was silly. However, I removed the link anyways. I then discovered who this seller was, and he had held a grudge against me from a long time ago when I outbid him at one point on the actual coin I was selling(I didnt realize it was the same guy when I originally posted the link). So it got me wondering, if it was really poor taste for me to list a link to a recent sale, or if the seller just asked me to remove it because he does'nt like me. Anyways, thanks for the responses!

I think it's a good idea for the reason you said - it could give the buyer an idea of what a recently sold example was sold for.

ebay didn't have an issue with it, it was just the seller. Anyways, I decided to compromise and just list the lot number instead of an actual link.

As a side note, if you haven't already done so, I'd recommend putting this guy on your Blocked Bidder List to avoid problems with him. I think I remember this guy that was all bent out of shape because you outbid him on a junk SLQ lot that contained a dateless 1916. If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, he really had a grudge and I'd definitely put him on your BBL to avoid potential problems.
