You can't compare a coin from 30+ even 50+ years ago with todays coins when it comes to mintage numbers

todays coin can be bought with the click of a button from the U.S mints website in sets, rolls eazy to get

A low mintage coin many years ago was sought out by looking for them or buying from dealers or someone with bank connections or someone that pulled them from circulation to resell say a 50-d Jefferson nickel with low mintage numbers.

Versus today alot ( tens of thouands + ) of people ordered 2009 nickels from the mint in sets and rolls in high grade..

In late 2010 I searched roughly 25 boxes of nickels and was able to find only 2 2009 nickels. I'd be glad to average that many per box! Put some aside for us please! ^_^

Both the 09 dimes and nickels were carrying a very high premium when they first came out, but they have simmered down quite a bit since then. It had to do with being released so late in the year and in lower quantities.

Some of the 09 pennies were similar. I remember when the birthplace penny was out and nobody could find them in circulation yet, I was out on a road trip driving down I-80 through Ohio and at a rest stop I got a brand new BU log cabin penny as part of my change. I asked the girl if she had more and she sold me a whole roll of them for 50c. What a find at the time!

It's funny, I was making the same trip a month ago and I stopped at a similar rest stop and again got brand new change. Makes me wonder if these interstate rest stops get the newest change sooner than other places.

Pretty average night - I went through 7 rolls of nickels and found 5 2009-D. All have full steps with normal bag marks, one is starting to lose its luster, the others are all nice and shiny.

If there is really that much of a demand, I suppose I could auction some off...

Yeah, it seems pretty strange. From maybe Oct onwards (maybe earlier) I've had no problem finding 09's. I go through a box or two a week and was finding so many that I quit setting them aside. The last month or so I haven't seen nearly as many. See more 2010's now than the 09's. Sounds like the fed may have initially released large batches in some regions and not others.

Actually, NO ONE ordered 2009 Nickel rolls from the Mint.
You can't order Nickels like that from the Mint. The last time you were able to do so was with the "Westward Series" a few years back.
And ALL of the Nickels from the "Sets" that you speak of, are SATIN FINISH, not Business Strikes.
And it's the biz. strikes that we're referring to with these '09 P & D's.

And I DO agree.......you can't compare todays "low mintage" with 50 years ago!
When they mint ONE BILLION coins per year on average....and then, out of the blue, they mint only 39 million P's and 46 million D's for a total of 86,640,000......... THAT'S A H.U.G.E. DIFFERENCE.
50 years ago we had less than half of our country's population too.....so, it's all reletive to me.

I too will go along with error coins for the highest priced coins still floating around. Coins like the Lincoln Cents 72, 83 and 95 Double Dies are still found in circulation. Same with the 84 Double Ear. And don't forget those odd balls like the 59 Wheat Back, 74 Aluminum. Possibly in a bag of Wheat backs there are still 55 Double Dies, 43 Copper, 44 Steel ones.
For coins found in circulation, pennies have my vote.

Not to chance the subject, but reading just carls post brought back some memories. In 72 when the double dies came out there where 4 or 5 of us collecting coins and that summer we must have gone through plenty of penny rolls. We never found a dd, but I did get a clipped penny out of a roll.
Thanks Carl!

I'm with the others on the 2009 nickels and dimes. I haven't found any in circulation. Also, I haven't seen any 2009 Lincoln cents cents since that year. It would appear that they have become somewhat scarce now also.

Here's the count from the last 50 rolls I went through - 41 2009 nickels. That's almost 1 per roll. The only year I am sure I got more of is 1964 (and we all know how common those are). Most look uncirculated, but there are a few that have seen some use.

So, if there is really interest in these, I'll be more than happy to auction them off.

If you stick with the guidelines of the OP, no errors, no varieties, just date and mint and not earlier than 1964, then it would say it would have to be the 1964 P & D Kennedy halves. If you ignore the premium because of the silver then the best is probably the 1982 and 83 quarters in Unc. Frankly except for errors, there really hasn't been any date/mint circulation coin of value since the 1950-D nickel.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but a 1996w Roosevelt dime is pretty cool. It only came in that year's mint set, but it is a business strike, or at least as far as I know. I doubt you will find any in circulation, but I bet they are out there as the sets are broken up and mistakenly spent.
