I traveled to a coin dealer (questionable) today and I have not encountered a more rude, nasty, obnoxious person in many years. He sure rattled my blood pressure.Reason for the trip I have a 19 coin set of Kennedy 1/2 $ 1992-2010 silver gem proof ultra cameo S mint mark.Beautiful, clean, shiny,no spots or clouds,or anything just beautiful looking to me. I only wanted a few of the coins checked for their weight in grams so I could confirm to myself that they were actually silver not clad as the weight is different.
I called this person told him what I wanted at length and he agreed for me to come.Coins protected,2 pair of gloves and a good mood. long story shortened. He tells me he is a collector,buys/sells coins for over 25 years and only 1964 Kennedy's are silver, mine are not, even before seeing them,he refused to wear gloves or listen to my comments.
Needless to say I left but Boy was I Peeved.I went to a jewelery store in town, had the weight checked, confirmed they are all silver by weight. Sure hope other coin dealers are not like that fellow.Comments welcome gasman

Thats too bad that you had a bad experience. Are you sure the person you talked to on the phone is the same person that helped you?
Anyway, keep in mind that dealers are humans like the rest of us and they have good days and they have bad days. If it's a pattern then avoid him like the plague but I am the type to give someone a 2nd chance. If he's rude again, then speak with your wallet...as in not buying from him and not selling to him.

What is the name of the shop and location so we all can avoid it?

Sort of said already. People are just people you know. You may well have got there right after his wife yelled at him for something or his kids just got arrested for drugs. You never know for sure what is happening in someone else's life that effects their attitude. There is a coin dealer I've gone to over the years many times. The entire store was sold and the new owners treat everyone like dirt. They are rude, ignorant, no deals and lots of just poor coins. So I just don't go there now. There are way to many places that treat customers really well so just find a new place. Never let things like that get to you. Ulcers are just not worth it.

um, what ever happened to leave your problems at the door? I think guy is in Wake Forest, or maybe my first guys brother, LOL. No excuse for rude behavior in the work place IMO. I'm paying them, they're not paying me. I'll take myself to someone who wants my buisness. There are professionals that are rude, and realize their error and apologize, I give all second chances. RUDE and no- it- all. No thanks, I wouldn't go back either. Bad Day just doesn't cut it when you're in business, or you won't be very busy.

I would think that your in the market for a jewelers scale. They're all over ebay and relatively cheap. Could save you a lot of aggravation in the future if you continue to deal with this dealer. Might also want to get a set of calipers that measure .0001" to check diameters/thickness of coins. Those can be had cheap too. Sorry to hear you had problems with your dealer. I really like the one I go to.

Yup, I agree w/ Carl - find a new dealer and don't stress over it. There are plenty out there that treat people right. No sense wasting time / energy on a jerk.

Maybe you should give us the name of the store and location, might be fun to call and ask if they have any modern silver proof coins

A little hint for people needing a scale...
If there's a 'head' shop in your town, they almost always have digital scales for $20 or less.
They are being sold for other purposes, but nearly all are accurate within 1/10th of a gram.
(And, if you don't know what a 'head' shop is... Think glass pipes, bongs, or old fashioned 'green' tobacco. If all else fails, ask a teenager.)

Suggest buying a gram scale on Amazon or something -- very cheap and convenient to have rather than drive somewhere to get an estimate. Sometimes a person like that may be trying to cheat you and buy your stuff below real value through lies, but other times they may just lack the knowledge to know what they are looking at. I was recently in a pawn shop where the owner seemed to think the 40% silver Kennedy halves were 90% silver...didn't seem like he was intentionally telling lies, but can never know for sure. I then tried to sell him some and he said they don't sell very fast so he didn't want anymore...
