Are there reeding on the rim of the coin? If so, it is just smashed. If they are not there they could have been sanded off or a real broadstrike. You might check the rim. Also look to see if the silver flows farther over the rim than a normal dime.

Yup...broadstruck is struck out of collar = no reeding. It would also be larger around than a normal dime.

It looks like the whole coin has been flattened, post mint.

The coin is not damaged, nor is it a broadstrike. This is a typical appearance for 1985-D dimes. The poorly struck design rim is a consequence of excessive die convexity (a design flaw) and inadequate upset at the Denver Mint.

Thanks for the update Mike. I hoped you would chime in. You've seen a lot more errors than most of us, but the difference is that you know what can happen more than the regular collectors know about. Is their any premium for a coin like this over face? I know the original poster would like to know this.

There's no premium associated with this appearance, since it characterizes the majority of 1985-D dimes.
