So, I'm going through my great grandad's collection and have found some good stuff. In his stuff, I found two envelopes of 1962 proof sets. They are in the original yellow envelopes with the pink packing slip. Anyway, one of the sets is normal and the other contains both the DDO Franklin and the DDO Washington! I'm wondering if having both coins in the set is uncommon? I'm guessing the proof set is more valuable as is rather than breaking the coins apart and having them graded? I can post pictures in a few days, plus an AU variety 1899 IH red.

Depending on the doubling you are seeing it will determine whether you should split the set or not. If Machine Doubling I would leave the set in tact. A mild doubled die I would probably also leave in the set and mention when selling the set. Strong doubled dies I would break out and sell individually. Images of what you are seeimg on these coins would be important to tell for sure which way to go.

Is the collection YOURS now, Are you just going through the collection, if so be very careful as a scratch on a proof coin, is NOT good, do you intend to sell these coins, are you a collector, I would do some research on everything and KEEP the collection intact, IF they are yours to do so.........PS, I would also research the dbling you see,Post some pictures, there are a few kinds of dbling, machine dbling, doubled die coins,Some carry a premium and some do NOT.....Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. The doubling I am seeing is what is illustrated by the CP guide. The photos match nicely. I'll post pics later!

Sorry, I didn't answer your questions! The collection isn't mine per se, it is kept by my Great Aunt. Being the only collector in the family, they have let me know that if I need anything out of it that I can ask.
Even if the coins are not "mine", I'm allowed to take coins for examination and grading. You can imagine me as the overseer and my great aunt as the caretaker.
I am a collector, but not necessarily an error or variety collector. I'm pretty close to finishing my type set and even have a couple gold slots filled, so that is my focus right now. At the front of my Dansco 7070, I have a list of each coin and how they were acquired. Most of my coins have a long family history, such as a 1851/81 large cent that I posted about.
And to be honest, I will probably stick these doubles into my Dansco to illustrate doubling and proof versions. And to show off what Great Grandad bought in 1962. However, if there is great value in both of the proof varieties being packaged together, then obviously I shouldn't break them up. If I do send them in, I'll send them in sealed.
I'm out of town and in a pinch, so it might be a day or two before I can get some photos up here. But if you are curious, just look at the 62 Washington Proof and 62 Franklin proof in your CP guide.
